Warm Summer Potato Herb Salad

Warm Summer Potato Herb Salad from PasstheSushi.com

Why hello Summer. You blasted in with out warning. It’s cool, I wasn’t ready for you yet. Hadn’t swept the back deck or gotten out the lawn chairs. The plants went from frost warning to brown stumps of dried out hat. But it’s ok. Come on down, we’ll make room at the table for you. Ignore my passive aggressive attitude towards Mrs. Nature again. It’s been like 9 billion degrees all week and I just wasn’t ready for that. I love the summer, and everything that comes along with it. But we were getting a great dose of spring in […]

Creamy Sweet Potato Soup with Maple Cream

Sweet_potato_soup_0249

Welcome to the Virtual Surprise Baby Shower for Rachel!  Rachel is the champ who runs Rachel Cooks – and her popcorn craving have been driving me crazy since she announced that she was expecting! We wanted to celebrate Rachel’s new bundle of joy by linking up and throwing her an online shower. I always give it up for momma’s that also run blogs. I can’t even being to pretend I know how rough it can be! I fall behind on posts and my kids are all furry and bathe themselves (well, for the most part). Rachel is always whipping up […]

Smothered Pork Chops with Smashed Potatoes

Smothered_chops_0099

Need a quick meal to get some food in your tummy before the impending sugar rush of the Trick or Treat haul? Yeah, me too. There is a giant bag of mini chocolate goodness that looks like it wont be given out this year due to the crappy weather just calling my name. So before I go all fat kid on that, I figured I should get something remotely healthy in my system. This weeknight quicky meal comes together with just a few pots and pans and doesn’t disappoint  The addition to cabbage slaw to the smashed potatoes makes for a […]

Loaded Potato Soup and Bacon Scones

potato_soup_045A

It’s Monday and you know what that means – Soup’s on! It’s easy to forget in the warmer months how much I love soup, but these past few weeks and rekindled a love affair too deep for a few warm days to make is disappear. It was a beautiful 70something degrees today but tomorrow calls for rain and I’m betting a bowl of this soup is really going to hit the spot. Now, as far as soups go, potato soup didn’t jump out at me as one I had to make, but it was one my boyfriend swore he loved. and you all […]

Loaded Chorizo Tacos

Chorizo_tacos_0102

Have you ever had a certain recipe or flavor stuck in your head? A savory smell you caught a brief whiff of that made you taste buds start begging or an ingredient list that looked like the perfect flavor combination? Well the recipe I made today was exactly that. The moment I spotted it I couldn’t get it out of my head and for this taco purist, that says a lot. Being particular or maybe just a little obsessed with cooking, I set out by making my own chorizo for the day. For those of you interested in stuffing your […]

Whiskey Burgers & Zesty Potato Salad

whiskey_burger_0591

The other day my parents told me a friend of the family’s kid was reading my website. My first thought was cool. My second thought was, damn, do I curse too much? (Not possible, I am way more filtered on here than in the real world, snugglier too). I’m always shocked to find that people I know read a food blog.  Not because normal people don’t fill their Friday evenings with 32 tabs opened from Foodgawker or pages from Cook’s Illustrated planning next weeks menu, but because I am not sure what interest one would have in it unless you were, well, […]

Low-Country Frittata

low_country_frittata_0012a

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and what a better way to celebrate than with breakfast in bed? I’m not even a mom and I would be down with someone bringing me a delicious and satisfying breakfast that I didn’t have to cook myself. Sadly, I did cook this fritatta myself… but I was also the only one in my house eating it, and let me just tell you, with all these flavors packed in, it was amazing. Just in case you are considering not enjoying this in bed, this frittata would make an amazing brunch recipe for a large group. […]

Whiskey-Glazed Pork Chops & Corn Chowder Mac n’ Cheese

Did you know what you wanted to be when you were a kid? Did you have dreams of being a fireman or an astronaut? When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a marine biologist in the worst way. It wasn’t a ‘kind of sort of I’d like to do that someday’. I simply knew I wanted to be a marine biologist. I loved science of all sorts, but I have always been fascinated by the water. Even as a child, I thought it was really neat that we didn’t know all of the mysterious creatures that were hanging out […]

Slow Cooker Thanksgiving Sides

crock_pot_green_bean_casserol_2

There’s a few things in life I am grateful for since this is the week of Thanksgiving we should probably talk about them. I can think of three things in particular brought up the top of my head, my two small crock-pot and in my one large one. There’s not much you can’t take on in a kitchen with three crock-pots running on high. So, the other day when Pillsbury sent me an e-mail saying they could streamline some Thanksgiving recipes by making them in the crock-pot I rewrote this week’s menu of posts, and ran to the grocery store. […]

Thai Corn Chowder

thai_soup_ingredients_8

I held out about as long as I could, but it’s officially winter here. Maybe I’m jumping the gun a bit and it’s not really winter – but it might as well be. The weather is cold, the leaves are brown, my finger’s went numb on our bike ride yesterday and we’ve already had snow. As far as I’m concerned, that’s winter. So we’ll rejoice in the good things about winter – and our favorite part? The comfort food. I never realized how much of a soup and stew addict I was until I started this blog. I have already wiped […]

Cheesy Potato Frittata a Secret Recipe

frittata_2

Look around this blog. You notice anything? Keep looking… That’s right. No basic egg dishes. Ever. The egg, one of the most versatile, simply and healthy things one could ever cook and you won’t see me use them (unless we’re baking something – then it doesn’t count). Want a dirty little secret? I hate eggs. Ever since one of my mom’s boyfriends told me that that little white thing you get in some eggs was a baby chicken I’d just murdered, I’ve never been able to eat them. These protein packed pillars of the gastronomical universe should make my meatatarian self salivate […]

Potato Latkes for Hanukkah

latke1

Last night we made latkes for Hanukkah. We aren’t Jewish but it’s always fun to try new things, especially things involving traditions. Besides, if I only stuck to my roots I would be stuck with bangers and mash and I know that would get old quick. These were yummy, came together quickly and Handsome totally had the right idea about using them again for breakfast. Our 2 large potatoes made about 12 latkes, so there were plenty of leftovers. Potato Latkes From 5 Star Foodie Ingredients: 2 large potatoes 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 […]

Can’t go wrong with meat and potatoes.

DSC_0238

Some nights you just know you can cook. Tonight was one of those nights. Dinner was simple, easy, healthy and delicious. When I could smell it almost all coming together it didn’t matter if it would sound interesting to anyone else, take a good pic for the blog, or get me more followers. All that mattered is that I knew it would taste good, and it did. Tonight’s meal came fresh from the pages of the July/August issue of Food Network Magazine. I started getting Food Network Magazine when it first started getting published last year. It has surprisingly grown […]

(Mini) Super Bowl Throwdown.

100_2512

Its Super Bowl Sunday and I know nothing about football. I know there’s a ball, a big green field and some running. That’s my knowledge of football. Yet, for the Super bowl, with all the hype, its easy and fun to get into it. It’s way more fun with other people. We’re having a few friends over and I am making some of the normal football foods – or at least that’s what the food network tells me. All of these ideas came from glancing over a food network recipe and taking it from there with what I had to […]
