How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Mixing the Cinnamon Filling

In a bowl, combine all the filling ingredients and give them a good mix using a fork. Set this mixture aside for now.

Preheating the Oven

Start by preheating your oven to 425 degrees F.

Preparing the Dough

In the bowl of your stand mixer, attach the dough hook. Add the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Then, pour in the buttermilk, maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons of the melted butter. Mix everything until well combined. Don’t forget to scrape the sides of the bowl to make sure everything’s incorporated. Finally, let the mixer run for 3 to 5 minutes, kneading the dough. Once done, remove the dough from the mixer and cover it. Pop it in the fridge for a 20-minute chill.

Rolling and Filling

Once the dough is chilled, take it out and place it on a lightly floured surface. Next, roll or gently press the dough into a 12 x 8 rectangle. Then, drizzle 2 tablespoons of the melted butter onto the dough and spread it evenly with your fingers.

Remember that filling you set aside earlier? Pour it over the dough and spread it out, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Press the filling down into the dough.

Rolling and Baking

Starting from the long side of the dough, carefully roll it up, pressing gently as you go. This should give you a nicely rolled dough log. Next, pinch the seam shut and place the log seam side down on your work surface.

Getting Ready to Bake

Brush a 9-inch cake pan or an iron skillet with 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Next, slice it into 8 even pieces, each about 1 ½ inches wide. Then, place each of the rolls into the prepared cake pan. Give them one last brush with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Finally, pop the prepared pan into the preheated oven and let the rolls bake for about 20 to 23 minutes until they turn golden brown.

Whipping Up the Icing

While the rolls are baking, whip up the icing. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and add the sugar. Next, pour in the maple syrup and mix everything until smooth. If it’s a tad thick, just add a teaspoon or two of milk until it reaches your desired texture.

The Final Touch

Once the cinnamon rolls are done baking, let them rest for at least 5 minutes before generously topping them with that delightful icing. Serve and enjoy!

What to Serve With Pecan Cinnamon Rolls

While you can totally eat these delicious rolls on their own, it never hurts to pair them with some savory dishes like Beef Pork Frittata and Biscuits with Creamy Gravy and Sausage to prevent that pesky sugar crash later in the day! Or if you’re fixing to feed a crowd, consider a whole platter of this Cinnamon Roll Casserole to make everyone happy.

Expert Recipe Tips

  • Cut the rolls with a very sharp knife or unflavored dental floss for perfectly cut rolls every time.
  • Make a double batch for a large gathering or freeze the second batch before baking for up to 1 month. When you’re ready to bake, let the rolls come to room temperature and bake as directed.
  • Feel free to top the rolls with extra pecans for even more crunchy goodness!

Leftovers and Reheating

Store any leftover cinnamon rolls in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days. If you haven’t devoured your cinnamon rolls by that time, pop them into the fridge for up to 1 week. You can also freeze your cinnamon rolls for up to 2 months.

When you’re ready to eat your cinnamon rolls, pop them into the microwave for 10 seconds or longer, depending on how hot you like them. If you’re removing your cinnamon rolls from the freezer, let them thaw in the fridge overnight and use the same reheating instructions.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make these cinnamon rolls ahead of time and bake them the next morning?

Absolutely! Just prepare the cinnamon rolls up until the point of baking. Then, pop them in the fridge overnight. The next morning, take them out of the fridge and let them come to room temperature while the oven preheats. Then, bake as directed in the recipe.
