Chocolate Walnut Turnovers

One of my favorite movie lines is when McLintock, after an outrageous demand from his daughter to protect her good name, points a gun at young Devlin Warren and tells his daughter in a rather matter-of-factly kind of way, “Well, I’m your father, and I love you” while pulling the trigger. If you’ve never seen McLintock, this sounds like a rather heartless scene, but it was a blank, Devlin was fine, and it resulted in a spanking for the mouthy daughter. I can’t help but think of my own father every time  hear that line. I’m not sure I could ever convince […]

Cranberry M&M Blondies

It’s amazing how one piece of furniture can inspire a whole lot of change. I have been living in the same house for almost four years and yet it has never been a home. The word home is weird to me. As I don’t pay for the roof over my head, I don’t treat it with the same sense of creativity. Slowly but surely my style is creeping out and I am settling in to this place, making it more then just walls, and learning to like it. The other night we added some decals to our bedroom walls. I know, it’s […]

Tuscaloosa Tollhouse Pie

Things have been really kicking up for us the mountain biking front so I thought my novice mountain biking self should share some thoughts with you. You will fall. You will have cuts, scrapes, and bruises. But, until the day you fall in horse poop, you’re not having a bad day. Stop thinking and peddle through it. Whenever I just push a little harder, I usually make it over the rocks, roots and other impediments. Freeze your extra water bottle. It’s gotten so hot that I cleared my only water in like 15 minutes on one of our last rides. […]

Back to Basics: Coconut Bars

coconut_bar

Let’s get back to some basics. The bar. Put the vodka down, that’s my stick, I’m talking delicious baked treats. Maybe it’s because I post for a food blog every day but I often lean towards fancy sweets, complicated cakes, adorable cupcakes, decadent sweets – leaving the most simple and most enjoyable basics behind. Often, ‘bar’ desserts come together quickly and pack a world of flavor with basic ingredients you probably have stashed in your pantry. The kind of flavor that makes you smile from ear to ear as you enjoy the few bites of goodness and sneak back for […]

Cocoa Brownies with Browned Butter and Walnuts

brownie10

I have seen these awesome brownies popping up on several other blogs lately and I can’t imagine why with how delicious the cover of February’s Bon Appetit looked. Cupcakes may be king with pies trying to stage a coup but nothing will top the nostalgia of a great simple brownie in my book. The basic Nestle Chocolate Chip cookie and Hershey’s brownie are two recipes that are my father’s tried and true favorites (and for good reason as they are great every single time he makes them). But watch out Dad, because this brownie just may give yours a run […]

I believe in licking the spoon.

We’re snowed in again today as another blizzard is blanketing the area. I’m not exactly sure how much we’re supposed to get this time but I think people are pretty much over the ‘ohh and ahh pretty snow’ stage – mainly because I don’t have 38 facebook posts announcing the snow. Walmart was so picked over that they were even out of frozen spinach. People had moved past milk and bread and the heavy cream and tortillas were gone as well. I got what I needed as was able to get out in a reasonable time to come home and […]
