This modern classic takes on a whole new dimension of flavor by swapping botanical gin for smoky mezcal. The mezcal Negroni is one of our favorite Negroni variations to make when we’re craving something bold but timeless.

Looking for a smoky twist on a classic Negroni recipe?

This tequila Negroni mixes bitter Campari with nuanced notes of smoke from mezcal, sweet vermouth, and Campari for a classic cocktail that every modern drinker will appreciate.

This cocktail recipe is made with Campari, similar to a Boulevardier cocktail and a Garibaldi cocktail. But unlike a traditional Negroni cocktail, we ditch the gin for bold mezcal.

What Is a Mezcal Negroni?

Let’s dive into what mezcal is. Introduced in the 17th century, mezcal is a type of spirit developed from smoking the heart of the agave plant using old world methods such as underground pits, lending to its smoky flavor. The difference between tequila and mezcal is that tequila has to be made from blue agave and is distilled in a brick oven or industrial steam machine known as an autoclave.

As for a Negroni, it’s one of the most classic cocktails with many variations, like this mezcal Negroni. The only thing we changed is swapping out the gin for mezcal, which provides a deeper, smokier mouth feel versus the more piney taste of gin. The result is a sophisticated drink with mezcal qualities and that classic Negroni flavor profile.

What you’ll love about this recipe:

  • SMOKEY – The classic Negroni flavor blends seamlessly with the bolder mezcal, producing a well-rounded, complex drink that almost every cocktail drinker will appreciate.
  • CLASSIC – The Negroni is a classic for a reason. Its balanced flavors create an iconic drink that has stood the test of time.

What You Need to Make a Mezcal Negroni

  • Mezcal – This smoky spirit contains earthy and sometimes peppery notes, creating a unique flavor profile for this Negroni recipe.
  • Sweet Vermouth – Vermouth is a fortified wine flavored with botanicals. It’s commonly used in many alcoholic beverages like a brandy Manhattan or smoked Manhattan. It’s the perfect sweet accent to the Campari and smoky mezcal and contributes to the drink’s deep reddish-orange hue.
  • Campari – This refreshing Italian bitter liqueur with a bitter, slightly spicy, and sweet flavor profile is used in many beloved cocktails, like a Campari spritz and a Negroni. This red liqueur gives the Negroni its classic orange color.
  • Known for its bright red color and bitter taste, Campari adds a bold and refreshing element to the cocktail. It’s the backbone of the classic Negroni and provides a counterpoint to the sweetness of the vermouth.
  • Orange Slice (garnish)

Expert Recipe Tips

  • Use the ratios listed or customize them to find your perfect fit.
  • If you love that smoky goodness, use a smokier mezcal. For a more balanced flavor, choose a smoother mezcal.
  • Chill your glasses at least 30 minutes prior to using them to keep the drink cool while sipping.
  • For more orangey goodness, use an orange twist and plop it in the drink alongside your orange slice.
  • The standard serving glass is a rocks glass, but you can use any type of glass you have. A coupe glass is nice for a classier look.
  • Use a large ice cube so it dilutes the drink more slowly.

How to Serve a Mezcal Negroni

A Negroni is the perfect before-dinner libation due to the sweet vermouth and Campari. The Italian aperitif liqueurs cleanse and open up the palate before a delicious meal, allowing you to savor every bite.

The mezcal Negroni is a stark contrast to the citrus-forward classic Negroni, perfect for those willing to take a walk on the wild side. If you try this recipe, please rate the recipe card and leave a comment down below to help out the next reader!
