This cocktail was created by my father during an evening of recipe development with Captain Morgan rum and this drink is kind of a hit in my house.

What is Almond Liqueur?

You most likely know this as Amaretto. Originally flavored from bitter almonds, modern commercial brands are often prepared from a base of apricot stones, peach stones, or almonds, all of which provide an almond-like flavor to the liquor.

What is Orange Liqueur?

This sweet distilled spirit has the distinct flavor of oranges, but can have a dry mouthfeel to it. Some may be more on the sweet or syrupy side, it will depend on the brand you choose. No matter what you get, this cocktail will taste great.

There are a few types of orange Liqueur:

  • Curaçao: Curaçao (pronounced kurra-sow, also curaçoa) liqueur is the oldest type of orange liqueur, and originated in the Carribeans.
  • Triple Sec: French style of orange liqueur. Often clear in color, it is commonly found at 60 proof levels of alcohol. This is the one we use in this recipe.
  • Brandy based: Many of the original curacao used brandy or rum as the base, such as Grand Marnier and Grand Gala.
  • O3: This premium liqueur is used in a variety of cocktails.
  • Patrón Citrónge: Neutral grain spirit flavored with Jamican and Haitian oranges. Perfect for tequila based cocktails.
  • Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur: This deep orange flavored liqueur is made in Sicily and is 80 proof. It typically goes through 3 rounds of distillation that include one with the whole blood orange, the second with the peel, and the third with lemons.
  • Borducan Orange Liqueur: This can be compared to triple sec, but it’s less sweet and has a bolder orange flavor. Mainly sold at 70 proof.
  • Aperol: Bright orange flavor and color, but is generally more bitter. This is better for simple cocktails and is often sold at 20-22 proof.

Now that you know about the liqueurs, let’s make our Black Almond Cocktail.
