Ingredients

For the Banana Bread Coffee Cake

  • All-purpose flour: Creates the structure for the bread.
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Baking soda & baking powder: Leavening agents that help the bread to rise.
  • Salt
  • Over-ripe bananas: The bananas should be almost brown. This is when they're at their ripest and will be super sweet.
  • White sugar
  • Eggs: Bind the other ingredients together.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances the other flavors in the banana bread.
  • Milk
  • Dark chocolate chips: Dark chocolate helps shape the overripe banana flavor best. In return, bananas make dark chocolate taste not too dark and bitter. You can also use semi-sweet chocolate chips if you prefer.

For the Topping

  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Brown sugar
  • Cold butter
  • Rolled oats
  • Walnuts

How to Make Banana Bread with Chocolate Chips

Preparation

Firstly, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9x13 baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

Now, in a large bowl, mix together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mash the bananas and add sugar and vanilla, giving it a good mix. Pour in the milk and stir just until combined.

Working in batches, mix the flour mixture into the banana bread batter until just combined. Stir in the dark chocolate chips and then pour batter into the prepared loaf pan.

Creating the Topping

In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, cinnamon, brown sugar, and diced butter. Use your fingers to break down the butter into smaller lumps. Add oats and walnuts, giving it a quick stir with your hand, allowing it to remain a bit clumped.

Gently pat the topping all over the top of the banana mixture in the baking dish.

Baking the Banana Bread

Next, slide the cake pan into the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes.

Cooling and Serving

Once done, remove it from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for 20 minutes before slicing or serving. Enjoy!

Expert Recipe Tips

  • Stick a toothpick into the center of the banana bread to check for doneness. If it comes out clean, it's done.
  • Don't overbake the banana bread, or it will become dry. You can always subtract a few minutes from the baking time if you're scared of overbaking the bread.
  • Swap the sugar for maple syrup to add maple flavoring.
  • Instead of the chocolate chips, feel free to use chopped chocolate from a chocolate bar instead for a more melty chocolate experience.

How to Store Leftovers & Reheat

Wrap it in aluminum foil, then roll some plastic wrap around it tightly, then put it in a zip bag or airtight container with a tight lid. It will last for a few months.

If you reheat it in the microwave, then be sure to place it on a damp paper towel when you put it in.

What to serve with chocolate chip banana bread

A perfect warm slice of moist, crumbly cake paired with a sip of Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew is a match made in heaven for breakfast or an afternoon snack.
