Enchilada Pasta Skillet & a Le Creuset Skillet Giveaway

enchilada__skillet_0167

To wrap up an amazing year at Pass the Sushi I have one more killer giveaway for you. There are some big changes in store for the blog next year, some large goals for 2013, and a lot more sass and fun. But that’s for a future post. For today, in this crazy busy week, I have a simple weeknight meal for you and a chance to win this gorgeous skillet. Since receiving my Le Creuset skillet, I think all of my other skillets have grown jealous and accumulated a thin layer of dust. I find myself keeping this bad boy ready […]

Quick Dinner Fixins’ Chicken and Artichoke Paella

paella_0455

Weeknight dinners are rough. Especially in December when the whole world seems to be spinning a wee bit faster. I get home and it’s dark, I’ve worked all day and I am dog tired. And heck, I don’t even have kids I have to worry about! But I take no excuses in the Pass the Sushi kitchen and believe there is always time for a real supper no matter how crazy things get. (Except for tonight, when I’m probably just picking up a pizza. Don’t judge.) For those of you who want some real meal inspiration on the quick and easy for the month […]

Weeknight Fettuccine with Sausage & Kale

Kale_pasta_0100

Early sunsets are not good for a darned thing. With the sun setting at like noon, I’ve been acting like an old woman. Just feed me, give me my pills, and put me to bed to the tune of Jeopardy. Ok, maybe not that bad, but it certainly feels like it. I never knew I was a summer person until this year. I don’t want to cook as much, go out as much, certainly can’t take as many pictures, or drive after dark. (See, little. old. lady.) The one thing cold dark nights are good for? Carbohydrates. Tons and tons of […]

Quick Dinner Fixins’ Cheeseburger Quesadillas

Cheeseburger_quesadilla_0325

Remember when you were a kid and summer lasted forever. You could spend all day every day laying in the sun, running around in the grass and the worry of returning to busy school days never even bothered you. Now that I’m an adult and don’t get summers off, it seems to fly by. Food bloggers everywhere are bursting with fall flavors, hearty soups, and comforting meals getting ready for cold weather to sink in. And I am just as guilty as the rest, prepping some new posts and recipes for the site and some other add on holiday bonuses […]

Lamb Grilled Cheese Sandwich

lamb_sandwich_0096

Last week  announced that it was time to kick things up a notch around here. Now, that means getting back in the kitchen and challenging myself with new techniques and recipes that intimidate me. It also means trying new things. Expanding horizons and all that. This challenge to myself completely contradicts yesterdays post. The cookies may have distracted you, but it was all about making time. The thing is, the kitchen is my time. So even if recipes as simple as a lamb sandwich appear from time to time on PtS, know that they were worthy of a post, and put a smile on […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Sloppy Jose Gorditas

jose_gorditas_0194a

There is something magic about those pop and bake refrigerated cans of dough. Pure freakin magic. They come out perfect every time, unless you are one of those people who always burns them (I’ve known a few). They are tall, flaky, and buttery – even before you slather them with more butter or jam. I am not above throwing a can or two in the cart when things are on sale, and, I must confess, I do subscribe to the Pillsbury weekly email. Yes, I am all sorts of classy. Really, they have some appealing quick recipes on there and I think they […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Chicken Fajitas

kita_fajita_0351

It would be both flattering and shocking if you believed that I made from scratch for every meal, and where there are a lot of things I do choose to make from scratch that a younger less experienced me would have scoffed at, I don’t.  So today I am going to share with you some things I keep in my pantry at all times, for those ‘in case of emergency’s nights’. Velveeta. For those of you who have followed me a while, this comes as no surprise. Velveeta is a staple in my boyfriends diet, and where we have come […]

Quick Dinner Fixins:Crispy Chipotle Chicken Wraps

chick_wrap_0068

With all our out and abouting going on on the mountain bike trails I realized I needed a few new toys of my own to go around. First, I wanted an everyday lens to have out there. My 35mm was just not cutting it for quick action shots. And a bag to tote all of this around in. The lens was easy – I walked into my local camera store and told them what I needed. Boom. The bag, no so much. You would think shopping for a bag to carry your camera around in would be easy. It’s not. […]

Open Face Tuna Melt for One

tuna_salad_0289

Being from a store where everyone knows your name (*see yesterdays post), it’s easy to forget sometimes, that when you are out in public, we have clients everywhere. While walking through the market, I get random waves and hello’s, sometimes even long conversations about so-ands-so’s kids or pets. Ordering pizza, a customer of mine may be making or delivering it. Have a question about your Mac? I’ve got clients for that too. We have a lot of weekly regulars that we have grown used to chatting with once a week. When I run into them at the mall (cough working […]

Personal Grilled Taco Pizzas

taco_pizza_0099

Today’s story has to be told, to get to tomorrows. After bragging about how much I love my job last week, I feel it is only fare to try to explain to you what being a part of the Captain Blue Hen family can be like. Some of you may be too young to remember a show called Cheers, so go wikipedia it. For the rest of you, you get exactly what I am saying. When you walk into our store, it is an extension of your living room. That level of comfort and friendship. We are the place everyone […]

Italian Hoagie Salad

italian_hoagie_salad_0327

Let’s take a moment to discuss the art of the U-turn. U-turns should be a fundamental part of driver’s education in which it is explained and practiced, that on occasion, if one has missed their destination or proper road, that they can, at a safer point further down the road for themselves and other vehicles around them, make a 180 degree turn to then head back to that which is was they missed. I think America has forgotten the art of the U-turn. Instead, people will now dart across 4 lanes of on coming traffic just to be in the turn lane […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Hawaiian Pulled Pork Sandwiches

hawaiian_pork_0008

Lets all say Aloha! Have your own luau with hula stirts and flower leis while you gather the family around the supper table. Tonights “set it and forget it” dinner is inspired by the flavors of Hawaii and my favorite Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch. Mom and Dad can tuck away some hidden flavor of pineapple and teriyaki while this pork shoulder slow cooks all day and is fork tender and ready to shred just in time for a little family moment. After all, that’s what this is all about! Ohana. I was probably too old to have the obsession with […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Cajun Mac and Cheese

cajun_mac_cheese_0215

Let’s get down on the bayou with a kiss, a frog, and some serious flavor. Macaroni and cheese is something I developed a late love affair with not growing up with the blue  box, but don’t make your children suffer the same fate as me, or they may become mac and cheese addicts (see my teenage years). The problem with mac and cheese is that it can get boring if you aren’t mixing it up from time to time with new flavors. Sure, melted cheese is amazing, but add some southern kick and we are really talking. I have yet to see […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Falafel-Crusted Chicken with Hummus Slaw

falafel_chicken_0529

A few years before the birth of this blog, I was struck with the knowledge that there was a lot of food out there I had never tasted. New flavors, textures and cuisines all together I had never even given notice to. The rest is history. Now, wrought with heavy debate, I can not choose my favorite type of food, my favorite meal, dessert or more. And every day I discover more. Once you are open and willing to try new things there is so much more out there then you could have ever imagined. One of the moments that shocked my […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Honey Pork Stir Fry

honey_pork_stirfry_1

This whole week is about bringing the family around the dinner table with fast delicious meals packed with flavors kids will want to try. The hook? They are all paired up with a little of that Disney magic. One of the biggest struggles for a lot of parents is getting kids to try new foods. Putting new ingredients on the table without an eye roll or verbal protest is something I see a lot of my friends struggling with. As I went through the recipes I wanted to make or post, I couldn’t help but pair a few here and there with some […]

Spring Gardens and Easy Chicken and Rice

chicken_and _rice_0255

Do you ever have those ridiculously stupid conversations with your partner where you end up annoyed just because? They often go like this, “Hey Babe, can you do this for me?” “No, I’m busy.” “Whatcha’ doing?” “I don’t know.” …. Please tell me we are not alone… So I huff off before early morning lack of caffeine and irritation sets in then feel like an ass two hours later when I spot Handsome home early from work sectioning our an 8×10′ area of our yard for a new garden. The garden I have been talking about… The garden I mentioned in passing weeks ago. Who’s got […]

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

cheese_steak_0566

It’s full out mountain biking weather now that we are clear from winter. Sure, we could be tough and bike all year long, but neither one of us seemed to muster up the courage to brave the frosty chill. We threw on our bike shorts in mid February and have been out every weekend at least twice since. Our goal this year is between 50 and 100 miles every month. So far this month, that’s not happening, but I can easily see us getting there. As with all things though, there are their little annoyances. Our biggest peeve has got […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos

crock_pot_chicken_taco_0429

If there has been one thing to steal my heart from the wonderful clouds of smoke from my grill this year, it has been my slow cooker. I have always loved having a magic dinner-ready-when-I-walk-into-a-house-filled-with-tummy-growling-awesomeness tool but this year I really feel in love with it. And why? BBQ nachos waiting for me at 9:30 at night after a long day of work, creamy soups comforting me when I can’t chew, and this cookbook. America’s Test Kitchen Slow Cooker Revolution has been my most used cookbook this year. I am constantly flipping through it tabbing more and more pages. I […]

Leftovers? Eat like a pilgrim, Pilgrim Sandwich

pilgrim_sandwich_3

The best part about Thanksgiving? The leftovers, duh! For as long as I can remember, a local sub shop has offered a sandwich all year round that is a carb-oholic’s dream come true. The sandwich starts with a beautiful thick hoagie roll overflowing with stuffing, turkey, cranberries and a slather of mayo. It’s the kind of sandwich that requires a long nap or a marathon immediately afterwards.  It’s the kind of sandwich I only allow myself to order maybe once a year. It’s the kind of sandwich that give’s angels wings. Oh yeah, it’s that good. So, you can imagine […]

Flank Steak with Peanut Butter Noodles and a Philly Bloggers Meet-up

peanut_noodles_5

This weekend was awesome. First off all, I had off. For those of you who work in retail or have a non-9-to-5 job, you get what I’m saying. Second, I got to meet some great food bloggers at R2L, an awesome event organized by Wendy at La Phemme Phoodie! R2L is a stunning restaurant located on the 37th floor of Liberty Place and Chef Daniel Stern did a wonderful job of pulling out all the stops by serving wonderful appetizers, drinks and preparing a flawless selection of dishes for us ‘foodies’ to photograph and  indulge upon. Photographer Eric Mencher […]

Open-Face Hot Chicken Sandwich with Creamy Mushroom Gravy

open_face_chicken_sandwich_21

I owe every one in the foodie blogging world an apology. Where I have made sure that posts were scheduled and up for the last week, I have been really bad at checking out everyone else’s posts and commenting. As I type this, it’s Monday night (I know, it’s Wednesday) and I haven’t had a moment to myself in 10 days. I have only been home before 8 PM once. My dad’s wife has been away on business for the past 10 days and even though my father is young, healthy, and fully capable of taking care of himself, I have still stopped by every […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Crescent Sandwich Roll-ups

crescent_apple_sandwich_24

Some days you just need a break from all the fancy meals and hard work. You just need something that will sooth the soul and make you feel all warm and cozy on the inside. You know, like on those days when your father arrives out of the blue in the front yard, boat in tow and tosses three giant live, flopping, breathing, fighting for their lives fish in the nearest cooler and drives away. I have never cleaned a fish. I have only seen it done once – over 10 years ago. They are flopping in the cooler. Flashbacks […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Barbecue Stuffed Chicken Salad

bbq_chicken_salad10

I know Im not alone, I have a frisky little cell phone. I can’t spell. I love spell check and run it at least three times per post and guartentee there is still at least one misspelling in every one of my posts that I find later. So when I got my smart phone I was rather excited for this predictive text technology.Boy was I wrong. Predictive text is more of a program designed to make you appear retarded to friends and colleuges. My phone for example is a sick one. I didn’t program it that way, it came that […]

Using up the Leftovers: Taco Mac and Cheese Steaks

taco_cheese_steak1

If you didn’t like my ‘Manwich‘, hated those Bacon Caramel Brownies and aren’t really down with tossing around your leftovers on a late night to fill your belly, I suggest you just go ahead and skip this post. For the four of  you left reading, get ready to party hard with your inner fat kid. Some nights I work late and by the time I get home I’m starving. I know eating late isn’t good for you, so you should be more cautious of what you choose, but that all flies out the window at half past nine after a […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Creamy Chicken and Pasta Salad

chicken_salad1

I can not be the only one who needs a day off after that ‘holiday’ weekend, right? Truth of the matter is – I didn’t get a day off! I had to work Friday, Saturday and Monday – leaving Saturday to bake and cook in the morning and run from my parents to Hansome’s parents for over 12 hours in 99 billion degree weather.  Here it is Tuesday and I’m back to the weekly grind. I think I missed out on something here! I even lost my Do Nothing Monday. I feel so robbed. I hope everyone partied hard to […]

Sage-Walnut Butter Sauce

butter_sage_sauce23

To say that I have a lot of recipes on file would be a huge understatement. I have a collection of bookmarked websites that would put the NY Public Library system to shame, more magazines than I know what to do with and a cookbook collection so large I had to organize it in a spreadsheet to not buy the same one twice. Recently I realized that this needs to change. I will never find what it is I am looking for if I am swimming in so many options I can’t breath. I realized that 99 tabs of paper […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Bubble Up Pizza

bubbe_up_pizza16

New to Pass the Sushi? Don’t miss a moment of randomness! Follow on Facebook and Twitter. When you love to cook, it’s hard to remember that not every dish needs to be elegant, time consuming and complicated. Sometimes it’s about coming back to the basics – which is something I am guilty of. I like to put a nice meal on the table every night, so spending a few hours in the kitchen isn’t even something I blink at – but not everyone enjoys cooking the way I do (why you’d be reading a food blog and not enjoy cooking […]
