With Mardi Gras right around the corner, I picked recipes from Cooking Up a Storm, an amazing cook book that with help from local paper, The Times-Picayune of New Orleans, gathered and collected cherished recipes lost when Hurricane Katrina struck. Getting down home with Meaty Gumbo

ts so cold here today that there were ice crystals on the inside of the backdoor for a large portion of the day. Now, I’m not complaining, it’s winter – but it’s bloody cold. The only good thing about the winter is the food. Cold weather brings out the best in hearty soups, stews and (not great for my waistline) comfort foods.
