Bakery Classics: Eclairs

eclairs_0216

Today I set out to cross off a baked treat that has been on my list for quite some time. Then, while working out of the giant behemoth that is Baking Illustrated I got sucked into several other recipes that I have got to try. Baking Illustraited is amazing, not just for its tried and tested quality recipes, but for the spark that ignites inside of you every time you dust of the cover and let yourself sink into a field of cream filled, dipped, and glazed dreams. Todays eclairs reminded me of what Pass the Sushi is supposed […]

Cannoli Cones

canolli_cones_0248

Cannoli’s are one of those dessert that draws a line in the sand and plants people firmly on one side or the other of the love it hate it boundary. Personally, dry, often stale pastry shells dusted with too much confectioners’ sugar just doesn’t do it for me. But the filling, that’s what makes it for me. I would always scoop out the middle leaving the ring behind and leave behind the crust (yeah, I’m going to offend some serious cannoli lovers with this, but I’m calling it a crust). I know some people who shrivel their nose at the […]

Mississippi Mud Brownies

Mud_brownies_0298

This is the kind of brownie I would pick out from the dessert table a mile away. The dense, gooey, thick kind of brownie that goes best paired with an ice cold glass of milk. If there is one thing I am a sucker for every time, it’s a great brownie. These ‘Mississippi Mud Brownies’ are the perfect kind of treat for social gatherings, block parties, or organized beauty pageants. Ok, that last thought may have come from a dangerous combination of Benadryl and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. (Danger, danger). So with that in mind, we’re cutting things short.   […]

Chocolate Martini Pudding Pops

tini_pops_0019

Yeah, you that right. Chocolate Martini Pudding Pops. Bring on the heat. Bring on the raging dog days of summer, the long mountain bike rides, and all the sweat. Because when you have a batch of these rich chocolate frozen treats waiting for you at home, it’s all worth it. Slushed is a perky recipe collection of 150 ‘Frozen, Boozy Treats’ and at first flip through the pages I was hooked. Technical Level: If you can crack an egg, you can make the recipes in Slushed. There is nothing complicated about the instructions or recipes. The most you will have […]

Baked Bars

baked_bars_0198

If you had told me a year ago that I would be mountain biking upwards of 20 miles in a weekend, over rocks, roots and the occasional fallen log, I would have laughed and changed the conversation. I didn’t know then that some crazy people actually clip their feet into tiny metal petals – yes, locking your feet into the bike – and if I did, I certainly would never clip my own shoes in. I had no idea that bunnies, squirrels, and groundhogs would dart widely in front of mountain bikes just like cars like tiny suicidal madmen. And oh […]

Andes Creme de Menthe Chunk Cookies

Mint_chocolate_cookies_0184

Clearly my attention span rivals that of my cat because there was much more to yesterdays post that I completely forgot about until later in the day… Yesterday, I joked about celebrating my 200th decline over at Foodgawker, but really I was just poking fun. I have long since gotten over the sting of yet another decline or the joy of accepts on the food p*rn sites. It used to excite me when I opened my email to a fresh accept, in anticipation for the boost in hits for the day, but I have noticed a pattern that happens to the best […]

S’mores Bars

Smores_bars_0063

Post-it is a company built for people like me. They thrive on freaks like me that can’t leave the house without at least one small tablet and a slew of writing implements or tiny little OCD cells start to fire away in the brain. The big honcho’s over there sticking their colorful tablets into perfectly stacked cubes know that cell phones, tablets or even space age technology will never replace my need to jot things down. They own me. On any given laundry day, you can find three of 4 tiny scraps of paper shoved in my pockets holding the keys to the secrets […]

Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Muffins & Races

PB_muffin_0095

We have had a really busy weekend and a lot of things I want to talk about with you that are really important to a food blogger, but *almost* everything got bumped to brag about more mountain biking. This Sunday, in a rather spontaneous choice, Handsome decided to race for the first time. The course is at a place we have ridden before, and minus some ‘race course’ alterations, he was pretty familiar with the terrain. He rode the track a few nights before the official race and was ok with his time, 55 minutes, but figured he could easily drop off […]

Tuscaloosa Tollhouse Pie

Things have been really kicking up for us the mountain biking front so I thought my novice mountain biking self should share some thoughts with you. You will fall. You will have cuts, scrapes, and bruises. But, until the day you fall in horse poop, you’re not having a bad day. Stop thinking and peddle through it. Whenever I just push a little harder, I usually make it over the rocks, roots and other impediments. Freeze your extra water bottle. It’s gotten so hot that I cleared my only water in like 15 minutes on one of our last rides. […]

Samoa Tartlets

Samoa_tarts_0391

About 5 years ago, with the horrid economy looming over head, I was lucky to be laid off. I left a job that I had come to think was important, I was making very good money and had been since I was fresh out of high school, the savings account was well stocked, and I was on my own. It seemed like the perfect sort of life. With all that around me, I wasn’t aware of how miserable a person I had become. Without warning I said my good byes to some very kind people, flipped some other people the […]

Chocolate Banana Doughnuts

banana_donuts_0047

Schools out, the holiday season is over, summer is breaking over the horizon with temperatures peeking into the 80’s and I thought for sure that would mean that I would have some long and lazy days. Wrong. But it’s all in a good way. There are some things keeping me very busy over here in the Pass the Sushi kitchen/office and I can’t wait to share them with you. However, they are preventing me from being an active member of the food blogging community. My comment time has dwindled to barely nothing, and even as I type this for tomorrow the clock […]

Double Chocolate Gooey Butter Cake

chocolate_butter_cake_0435

It’s nearing 9:30 at night and I just got in from today’s shift. After we closed the store, I had to run to the market for a few things and decided that a turkey and cheese sandwich would be perfect for supper. It beat the extra protein Speical K out by a land slide. So won’t be buying that again. At the market I always choose the most strategic line. I carefully inspect them all and then without fail always end up in the worst line. Sure, there’s not much left to be rung in but something is going to […]

Peanut Butter & Jelly Chocolate Bars

pbnj_bar_0248

Who’s got two thumbs up and is addicted to Instagram? This girl. I know that I am like 4 years late to the party. Sue me. When Handsome first got his smart phone, I was addicted to Angry Birds. I wanted to play with the little gadget any chance I got so we finally broke down and purchased me one of my own, and you know what? I haven’t played Angry Birds on it once. I tried Words With Friends and Sudoku and forgot about them after a few weeks. I have a twitter ap and can check my […]

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Muffins

Macadamia_Muffins_240

It’s crazy to believe today is just the first day of spring. I guess Spring just wasn’t messing around this year, shoving old Jack Frost out of the way and showed us what it’s all about! There are people outside (I hope that doesn’t fade), we have already been hitting the mountain bike trails (wow, do I have a way to go), and I have this insane urge to grill everything. The cats and dog seem really pleased about our early spring as the wild life in the yard has them stalking from window to window making those amusing clicking sounds that […]

Grasshopper Cake

Grasshopper_cake_0416A

It’s time to go green! Party down! And get your drink on! This cake is a win for all of the above. So let’s sit back unwind and enjoy some St. Patrick’s Day festivities.  Now, on to my latest obsession…. layer cakes. Well, I’m not sure three in two weeks makes an obsession, but it sure feels like it!      Check out these other St. Patty’s inspired posts… ok, not really, but some are green and some have alcohol – #winning.   On a completely unrelated note, the cost of first class stamps is now $0.41 cents. The look […]

Thin Mint Trifles

thin_Mint Triffle_0097A

There is something so awesome about Girl Scout cookies. From childhood memories of selling them myself (though,  I never made it past Brownie) to a secret love for the little buggers, they are awesome. So, when I saw something like 20 boxes in my father’s pantry, I first worried that he was stocking up for doomsday, then ‘borrowed’ a few boxes for creation. We’ve been enjoying sweet desserts with the classic Girl Scout cookies hidden in here and there for weeks. I saw these beautiful Tagalong Peanut Butter Parfaits last year on My Kitchen Addiction and fell in love with the […]

Banana Chocolate Granola

banana_granola_0259

Have you seen this little video yet? I’m Making Cook’s Illustrated Beef Stew! I saw it on facebook the other day and it left me in stitches. I am a huge fan of the Cook’s Illustrated publications, owning more of their supplemental magazines, recipe collections and every off shoot of the brand that I can find. I enjoy reading the tips, tricks, and methods leading in to why they prepare things the way they do, but say I will never cook my way through all of them would be an understatement (as you can see joked about in the video linked above). The quality […]

Irish Cream Chocolate Pots De Crème

We really have to eat more salads Why does every hairdresser tell you something different? It really kind of ticks me off. I get a different story about whats good or bad for my head from everyone of them. Don’t they know I am convinced I am going to fry my hair off one of these days and have to rock a shaved head? Hellooo. I could totally not rock ‘shaved head’ by the way. The never ending cycle of motivational pins next to cupcakes loaded with frosting and dripping with glaze cracks me up. You are not getting skinny […]

Sea Salt and Thyme Chocolate Chunk Cookies

chocolate_chip_thyme_0041A

Every year about this time the geese seem to become placated with their surroundings. I never considered my area south enough for a bird to be comfortable through the winter, but our ponds are filled with hundreds of geese, the fields lined with them and causal strolls through the park become dangerous missions filled with little land minds. Some people mind the geese, some people enjoy them. I don’t mind them have an opinion either way about their mass numbers and odd choice in the sunny tropical south. (Though, this winter they may be on to something). Every year though, there are a few scattered pairs that […]

Red Velvet Cupcakes

red_velvet_cupcakes_3

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. I hope you have special plans or are just making it an awesome day for yourself! Things are still winding down from my travels and a few other things I have going on, so no fancy dinner for us tonight (probably just left overs – that’s right, we know how to keep it classy). I did want to share a classic Valentine’s Day dessert and also, I realized I hadn’t shown you any of the pictures from my sisters wedding. There aren’t any of the ceremony only because I thought it would be in poor taste […]

Skillet Brownies

skillet_brownie_6A

If you were to have the impression that I cook a lot, you would be right. And through all most of my experiments, recipes, failures, and success, Handsome sits and eats without saying a word. I ask if it was good, and he  may nod, or say yes, but there is rarely any excitement in his voice. After a while, you just come to terms with it. He wouldn’t care if I fed him macaroni and cheese for weeks on end, he would nod and say it was good (which may be something I considered for a while just to see […]

Matcha and Chocolate Marble Cake & Lashgasim Mascara

matcha_chocolate_cake_8

Today is brought to you by the color green, the letter O, and some mascara, but mostly the color green. (That will teach me for photographing green bread on green with green. Duh much). Today I am bringing you some Lashgasim mascara. Two Faced is one of the only brands I know as far as the fancy make up goes. Fancy being anything you can’t buy one get one 50% off at the local drug store. I love Two Face’s make up primer and ration a tiny bit here and there as if it is the last make up primer […]

Brownies that are better than Crack?

crack_brownies_20A

If you are going to say something is better than crack, you have set the bar pretty high. My expectations are that I am not going to be able to walk away. I will be like a fiend for the thing unable to stop myself, to the point of being fidgety and wired trying to get more until ultimately I become fatigued and moody until I can have another hit. Well, heck, that’s me without dark chocolate in the house any old day, but these brownies will do it to you bad too. Just a small bite and you want more. But […]

Peanut Butter Brownies

peanut_butter_swirl_brownies_1

I’m pretty certain that I discussed on here and in the past how I believe in Christmas magic I’m still a fan of Santa and yeah I still send a letter to the North Pole every year. I realize this is probably uncommon in an adult, but as I passed an elderly woman the other night in the market who was humming Christmas carols out loud to herself, I couldn’t help but smile and believe in Christmas magic. Maybe it’s naive to believe that the month of December brings out the best in people, maybe it’s crazy to think that […]

Rich n’ Thick Adult Hot Chocolate & Whipped Dollops

cocoa_spoons_10

I’m having a bah humbug moment. As I type this I am listening to Christmas carols but there is still no tree gracing my living room with pine needles everywhere. There is nothing wrapped. There is no holiday menu planned. I’ve cooked today, cleaned today been to the market today, and really I am not feeling it. Which is not like me at all. Normally I am a Christmas fanatic. One of those insanely perky people who will wish random strangers Merry Christmas and dance about with my Santa hat on with no fear of judgement from anyone. This year its not there. This […]
