Quick and Easy Morning Spinach Smoothie Recipe

Morning Spinach Smoothie // PasstheSushi.com

It’s that time of year…. I’m starting to itch for spring. Mother Nature’s cruel sense of humor gently pushed cabin fever over the edge with a few nice days before dipping back down in the 20s. But those few days were glorious. And now it’s all over. I want out. I want later sunsets and dirt trails. I want friends exhausted and dirty enjoying a beer and laughter after a long ride. I ran my first race of the season on Saturday. It was a glorious 40 degree start. No base layers needed. But the ground hadn’t had a chance […]

Spam and Eggs for Pass the Cook Book Club with Debbie Lee

Spam and Eggs from PasstheSushi.com

Don’t knock it til you try it. That’s a phrase I grew up hearing when something new was put on the plate in front of me. I have tried to live like that since I started cooking. The more I cooked, more ingredients I worked with, the more I tried, the more food I found pretty darned tasty. So, when I checked out the recipes for this month’s round of Pass the Cook Book Club, from  Seoultown Kitchen by Debbie Lee, that’s the spirit I embraced. Sam (the darling hostess over at Little Ferraro Kitchen), picked three recipes – and […]

Cinnamon Bun Ice Cream

Spending half of the summer off my beloved mountain bike and learning to road ride I have decided to add one more goal to my season this year. A 100 mile road ride this Saturday for Bike to the Bay, a fundraiser for MS. There will be a lot of people, the day will start off chilly, and I’m guessing it’s going to take me 6 hours to do this. Mentally, I’m already psyching myself out. The other part of me just keeps making jokes that it’s all downhill since we are headed towards the water Handsome and I are […]

Belgian-Style Yeast Waffles

Belgian-Style Yeast Waffles from PasstheSushi.com

Earlier this summer I pulled/torn/hurt/something my groin. Not fun. I don’t recommend trying it because, although it sounds funny, your groin is this mass of interconnected core muscles that you use for everything. So, finally, after 8 weeks of a slow improvement and no running, I started seeing a chiropractor to maybe help. Sure, a chiropractor is not going to heal a torn muscle, I know that. But, as this is my first time seeing a chiropractor for anything, I can kind of say they are the boom shiznit. She pops, cracks, pulls, and stretches me. What makes this story […]

Noshing Local: Home Grown Brunch Newark Delaware

omelet_0400

Breakfast is not my thing. Waking up and eating a pile of sugary sweet buttered pancakes or waffles. No thank you. But after a 20 mile bike ride, I can be talked into all sorts of things. Especially when my stomach is growling and I’m about to eat everything that isn’t bolted down in the kitchen. Plus, as cheep as eggs are, there’s something nice and relaxing about going out for breakfast on a weekend day. Stretches things out and makes the day seem to last a little longer. We picked Home Grown Cafe on Main Street in Newark for […]

Sticky Buns

Sticky Buns from PasstheSushi.com

Sometimes I don’t know what to say. I’m good with wit and humor, but when things come down to it, I never seem to have the words to make things better. There’s been a lot going on recently in our world where I just sit back in horror unsure of how to express my sadness. It’s time like those that I find myself in the kitchen baking… I may not be able to speak words that will comfort, but I can show up and share food. My way of showing I care. Last week I was left speechless and lost […]

We’re baby sitting Goulda, my 140 pound rotty, again. She has progressed amazingly from the scared abused animal she was the first time she came over, who couldn’t walk up the stairs and into our house. She hid behind me and away from any males, dropped to the ground submissively with any noise, and was in general a pretty big hot mess. It’s awesome to see her bolt up the stairs and into our house now with her large brick of a head barreling through anything or one in her way. Ah progress. She has previously gotten ill, which I am counting as a […]

Baked Mini Blueberry Streusel Donuts

Baked Mini Blueberry Donuts from PasstheSushi.com

Let’s have a little chat about etiquette. Internet etiquette that is. Last week it was brought to my attention that one of my photos, along with the entire recipe was posted to a facebook page that wasn’t mine. It’s the internet. It was built to share information quickly. It was a recipe. I post recipes on the internet because I want people to try them. But copying and pasting an entire post to your own page without and credit is just plain wrong. Sadly, these sort of pages are springing up everywhere and the people who follow them feel that they are […]

Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Chocolate Chip Pancakes

It’s amazing what a little sunlight is good for. There are tiny blue flowers popping up in the weeds that are overrunning my garden and I am taking that as the arrival of spring. If these microscopic blue buds can survive the cold nights, it must mean that warmer weather and longer days are right around the corner. I don’t want to admit this to myself, but I think the winter makes me an antisocial grump. I can’t get outside and ride (I am just not tough enough), I don’t want to hang out as much, and my nice warm bed beckons me far […]

Christmas Brunch: Slow Cooker Eggnog French Toast Monkey Bread

Monkey_bread_0266a

This Monday is supposed to kick off a new series on PtS since the soup kitchen has closed. But since it’s Christmas Eve and all I want to do is run around cleaning and stressing over Christmas dinner humming holiday music and baking cookies I’m simply going to wish everyone a fantastic Christmas and wonderful holidays! Here is a painless Christmas brunch idea that can be tossed in the crock pot early while the unwrapping madness occurs and is ready in time for when everyone remembers they are hungry. Here’s a little sneak peek at things to come in the following Mondays. […]

Breakfast Burgers & Bloody Marys

breakfast_burger_0198A

Men, I have a question for you. What did women do that every time you try to compliment a member of the other sex, you have to follow it up with a long explanation or apology? Now, I’m not talking those sleazy low brow attempts that I get while trying to check out at the market. I’m talking about genuine compliments. Today, a male client of mine asked if I lost weight then immediately started to explain that I hadn’t needed to lose weight and wasn’t fat before. This explanation turned into a 5 minute apology, all before I had […]

Peugeot Pepper Mill Giveaway and BBQ Pork Frittata for Two

frittata_00160A

The other day I overheard Anne Burrell on Secrets of a Restaurant Chef say that she loves black pepper and pretty much adds it to everything.  Besides the many other reasons I’m convinced she and I would be BFF’s in the kitchen, that one adds a major bonus point. I’m a freak for black pepper. I don’t think any recipe (baking aside) gets plated without black pepper. But here’s the secret. I’m super cheap. I have always just kept the dollar store pepper grinder near by. I can see the shock on your face from here. Don’t judge. But today I get to finally spice up my breakfast […]

Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls

pumpkin_cinnamon_rolls_0183

So yeah, these cinnamon rolls are all over the internet right now, along with anything else pumpkin. I was flipping through my new copy of Baked Elements and trying to figure out what recipes I would test for my review and the entire chapter on pumpkin caught my eye. Fall is here and apples and pumpkin are pretty much on every food blog out there. I’m pretty sure I would have been blacklisted from the food blogging community had I not posted something pumpkin related. When I was making these, I didn’t think I was going to love them. None of the […]

Apple Pie Stuffed French Toast

apple_pie_french_toast_028

Do you judge a market by it’s price tags? Do cheaper price tags and bottom dollar prices make a market less clean or not as good as the ones with the flashy price tags and eateries? My favorite market isn’t the most expensive one in town, but because of it’s location the client base is very wide which means I can find almost anything I am looking for on the shelves, and at prices that won’t make me cringe either. It isn’t always spotless, but with the volume of people they get, I can’t complain about the tidiness though I have […]

Banana Cream Cheese Breakfast Cakes

Back in my high school days, my house was a pretty cool house to hang out at. We had live bands pretty much 4 out of 7 nights of the week, people we’re always over, and times were more good then bad. Music was always a large part of my life. I can remember my mom blasting Pearl Jam in her Ford Crown Victoria and singing at the top of her lungs. And at my dad’s house, the volume was always on as load as it could be until the neighbors complained. So, it only seemed proper that I give my dad two […]

Chocolate Banana Doughnuts

Schools out, the holiday season is over, summer is breaking over the horizon with temperatures peeking into the 80’s and I thought for sure that would mean that I would have some long and lazy days. Wrong. But it’s all in a good way. There are some things keeping me very busy over here in the Pass the Sushi kitchen/office and I can’t wait to share them with you. However, they are preventing me from being an active member of the food blogging community. My comment time has dwindled to barely nothing, and even as I type this for tomorrow the clock […]

Classic French Toast and a Mother’s Day Giveaway

french_toast_0356

Just in case a savory breakfast is not what you had in mind for Mother’s Day, I figured we should sneak this French toast post in as well. And two recipes from the same book in two days? You should all know what that means. A giveaway! Remember when I said I was done with new cookbooks, well an unexpected delivery from the Easter Bunny had me skimming the pages of CakeLove in the Morning with family present to remark on how attractive a smile the author, Warren Brown had. I proceeded to give the book a deeper look through later in […]

Low-Country Frittata

low_country_frittata_0012a

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and what a better way to celebrate than with breakfast in bed? I’m not even a mom and I would be down with someone bringing me a delicious and satisfying breakfast that I didn’t have to cook myself. Sadly, I did cook this fritatta myself… but I was also the only one in my house eating it, and let me just tell you, with all these flavors packed in, it was amazing. Just in case you are considering not enjoying this in bed, this frittata would make an amazing brunch recipe for a large group. […]

Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Confession time: I have a problem with books. Like, I have about 4 dozen too many. Books I will never use, books I had to have, books that were simply too cheap to not earn a place in a box in my father’s attic never to be seen again on my  book shelf. So, even though I am seeing other bloggers cook their way through cook books I want, am reading intersting reviews on cook books I really want to try, and am adding all sorts of new books to the ever growing wish list I am not allowing myself one […]

Biscuits with Creamy Gravy & Sausage

sausage_gravy_0134

A moment ago, I had the thought to hide the frivolous purchase of yet more ‘props’ I made before my man got home. It isn’t that I didn’t want him to know that I was spending money, I just don’t want to see the eye roll when he realizes there are two more plates to be meticulously piled into the cabinet. The second the thought passed through my head, I realized how ridiculous it was, however, I notice that a lot of my clients are on strict budgets managed by their significant others. I am not talking deadbeats who are gambling money away on magical variant covers that will someday be worth millions […]

Bite-Size Cinnamon Pecan Twirls

Mini_Pecan_bites_0270

While driving home the other night after a few good miles on the bike, Handsome and I were both blinded what we were both certain was a mermaid standing in someones yard. There were sequins and glitter everywhere, so of course it had to be a merfolk and Aquaman was not too far behind. Then as we turned onto our street more garrish dresses and young women trying to walk through yards without sinking their heals in appeared. That reminded me that while beboping around earlier that day a man on the radio said the average cost of prom was […]

Hearty Breakfasts and blogging awards! I received The Versatile Blogger award from Mi Vida en un Dulce  and Sweet and Salty, who both always have delicious treats and beautiful desserts featured on their blog.  I have been following Mi Vida en un Dulce for a while but Sweet and Salty are relatively new to me. They are both worth exploring and getting to know. I look forward to upcoming posts from them and more like these panko coconut shrimp…mmm or these Mai Tai cupcakes. Oh yeah. The award also states that I need share 7 things about myself…. No pressure. Dark chocolate always makes […]

Oatmeal-Honey Waffles

Honey_oat_waffle_0001A

Sometimes dawn seems overwhelmingly bright even though it creeps up on us slowly. The chirp of birds warns us its coming, as as traffic picks up and the light shines in, I can recall my mother coming in and throwing back the curtains while saying, “Birds are singing, sun’s shining! You’re burning daylight!” It was her wake up call every morning and I can’t even begin to explain how much it pissed me off. Whether by design or programming, I am not a social person in the morning. I wake up and want a solid hour to myself before I have to have any […]

Banana Chocolate Granola

banana_granola_0259

Have you seen this little video yet? I’m Making Cook’s Illustrated Beef Stew! I saw it on facebook the other day and it left me in stitches. I am a huge fan of the Cook’s Illustrated publications, owning more of their supplemental magazines, recipe collections and every off shoot of the brand that I can find. I enjoy reading the tips, tricks, and methods leading in to why they prepare things the way they do, but say I will never cook my way through all of them would be an understatement (as you can see joked about in the video linked above). The quality […]

Blueberry Buttermilk Breakfast Cake

blueberry_cake_0124

I need your help. This time next week I will be prepped and ready for surgery. I’m having all four of my wisdom teeth extracted and not looking forward to recovery. I’m hearing polar oposits as far as recovery goes. It’s either a breeze or miserable. Panic…. Have you had your teeth pulled? Only give me the good stories Rig these answers, guys! I need support! Tell me how it was a breeze and how quickly you recovered and that you popped back to your job the next day. Right? Right…. Oh! And most importantly, what recipes would you recommend […]

Carrot Cake Oatmeal with Crystallized Ginger

Carrot_cake_oatmeal_0220

I feel obligated to make today’s post as neutral as possible. It is my first time participating in the Improve Challenge and this months ingredients were carrots and ginger. Immediately thoughts of delicate baked goods came to mind. An excuse to finally make carrot cake seemed like perfect timing. But then I remembered others would be participating as well and I was certain I wasn’t the only one craving a slice of cake.  So I opted to try something a little different. I am working on expanding my breakfast menu from eating nothing until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, to actually eating healthy meals. It’s […]
