Tortellini Pasta Salad

tortellini-salad-0224FI

So, as far as food blogs go, I’m kind of missing the mark lately. I didn’t realize some kids had already returned to school and looking at my Pinterest feed you all are well into Halloween planning and I’m over here still pulling together summer barbecue and ice cream posts. Oops. If summer flew by for me, how do you guys with kids do it?! I mean between work, more work, bikes, and living, I’m pretty sure if I was responsible for another human it probably wouldn’t have seen a bath in like 3 weeks. Not that I don’t think kids […]

Slow Cooker Barbecue Nachos

Around this time of year, every year, I get sucked into the grand finale of football season: the Super Bowl. I’m one of those fans who ticks everyone off, paying no attention all year long, only to watch the last four games of the season and base my critical decision of who to root for on colors or mascots. But I have to admit, even I got caught up in the excitement of the game since Ray Lewis played his last home game, and the Baltimore Ravens have earned themselves a spot in the Super Bowl. (None of this would […]

Slow Cooker Barbecue Mac and Cheese

Slow-cooker-barbecue-mac-0496a

Because the weather outside is supposed to be frightful for the next few days. Because some days you just need to be fat. Because nothing hits the spot quite like macaroni and cheese. And because nothing says easy dinner like the crock pot. This is what’s for dinner. And there’s probably going to be leftovers. …that is, unless you accidentally leave the slow cooker on high for an extra four hours after supper causing your pasta to over cook and turn to mush. Then, it might just be pizza tomorrow night.

Farm Country Grilled Pizza

Brace yourselves. It’s the last week of grill themed action packed calorie loaded fat kid Mondays here at Pass the Sushi. I know, I cried a little myself. But don’t worry, there’s a weekly online counseling program and an all new theme for Monday taking over that is just as good. Let’s be realistic, nothing is as good as a flame kissed perfectly seasoned burger, but it’s just about as good. Tilapia with Black Bean and Avocado Relish

It’s all about moderation. At least I think so. At which point I should take the time to mention that I am not a nutritionist. A friend of mine is taking great steps in to  getting himself back into shape and is trying to work on his diet. He got caught in the routine of working long hours and the convince of pre-made, pre-packaged foods fit into his schedule just fine. But that lifestyle can catch up with you and he has decided to stand up and make a change. I really admire his choice to change, but I acknowledge that it’s a hard fight. […]

Turkey Sliders with Avocado-Ranch Dressing

Turkey Club Burgers

Can you believe the entire month of August went by without a single burger post on PtS? How the heck did that happen. I will never be making that mistake again. Actually, I’m considering incorporating even more burger loving on the blog. In the front of every issue of Rachael Ray magazine there’s a featured burger. It’s one of my favorite things about the magazine. Well, I’m thinking a burger of the month club is something that is long over due here as well. Meanwhile, enjoy your Labor Day celebrations if you are lucky enough to have the day off […]

Grilled Chicken with Wild Rice Salad

Grilled_chicken_and_rice_salad_0556

The phone just rang. It was the kettle calling to call the pot black. See, I’m the first one to whine and complain when I see Christmas Pins or pumpkins lining the aisles in July. I want to enjoy summer, the whole length of it, without feeling rushed into the holiday season. But what I didn’t know what that there was a tiny silent alarm in the back of my head that is triggered immediately after my birthday. Suddenly there’s an ominous black cloud threatening that I may not be able to share all of my awesome grill recipes with you before […]

Best Ever Barbecued Ribs & Charred Corn Salad with Basil and Tomatoes

barbcue_ribs_0016

How do you feel about tipping? What if it was suddenly forced on you? The two of us went to one of my favorite restaurants the other night, had a decent meal, average service, and enjoyed ourselves. When the bill was brought out, the numbers looked right and we were just about to throw the card into the folder when we noticed that the tip had already been included. An 18% tip. For two people. Now, normally, I am known to leave a killer tip if the service is good. Even if the food isn’t at it’s best, if I believe everyone […]

Slow Cooker Barbecue Beans

Slow Cooker Barbecue Beans

Baked beans are one of those things that seem pretty darned perfect right from the can with that long honored secret recipe locked away from us forever. So, when I set out to make my own batch of baked beans, Handsome asked why bother? One, I wanted too, two I wanted to see if a few hours of slow cooking and the geniuses over at Cook’s Illustrated could convince me that going back to a can was never going to happen again. It didn’t. But that’s not to say these beans weren’t kicking, but when a good can of beans is at most […]

Pulled Pork Cornbread Waffles

Pulled_Pork_0475

Last week at Big Summer Pot Luck the topic of jealousy was brought up. How sometimes we cdan see another blog, a more successful person, a cuter house,  or a perfect kitchen and that sometimes we can become jealous of these things. For me, I am jealous of those cute couples that work together in the kitchen. You know the ones that always have the amazing how to photos while one person cooks and the other snaps away. I will never have cute how to pictures featuring me in an apron for two reasons. One, my boyfriend still thinks it’s […]

Smoked Pulled Pork

Pulled_Pork_0329

Barbecue brings out the best of us. The family gathers around outside while the smell of smoldering wood or charcoal lingers in the air. Finally the feast is ready and the hungry group becomes primal for a moment and descends upon the food in a silence only broken by satisfied grunts. It also brings out the worst in people. You know the guy, the guy who wants to stand next to you and tell you exactly how he would be cooking the food. Lucky for you, he isn’t Sadly though, I have noticed this same trend on the internet when it comes to barbecue […]

Barbecue Chicken Salad with Homemade Mayo

mayo_0488

If there is one condiment you should try making at home – it’s mayonnaise. I will be the first to admit, condiments are cheap and easy to toss into the cart. Why waste your time making something that you can buy on sale for $0.98? But the thing about mayonnaise is – it’s easy. I mean super easy. And it takes less then 5 minutes to make. Have an extra egg yolk laying around? Bam, you’ve got mayonnaise. For this recipe you will need a variety of chips and a random stray hat.        Stick around, I have another use […]

Braggin’ Rights Smoked Brisket

brisket_0316

There’s an art to smoking meat. The perfect spices for rubbing the meat, a good cut of meat, and most important – smoke. Which wood to choose? How long to smoke? How big does my smoker need to be? Yeah, there’s a lot to learn when you want to take on the challenge of smoking, but I’m here to tell you, don’t let any of that bother you. It’s easy. Smoking meat is an art, but an easy one. Choose a nice cut of meat, lather it with some rub (store bought it necessary) and pop it in the smoker. Don’t […]

Cheddar Beer Weenies and BBQ Wings

superbowl_food_11

Because I’m an awesome planner (or maybe I am just a freak about my magazines), I ripped out a page in Rachael Ray October 2011 – and wrote the date on it – to share with you. As I mentioned yesterday, I know nothing about football, but RR was kind enough to have an entire page summing up the game for me. The article covers everything from the quarterback being the person who throws the ball, to the value of the touchdowns. That being said I still have no clue what an H-back is, or who the why the linebacker is watching […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Barbecue Stuffed Chicken Salad

bbq_chicken_salad10

I know Im not alone, I have a frisky little cell phone. I can’t spell. I love spell check and run it at least three times per post and guartentee there is still at least one misspelling in every one of my posts that I find later. So when I got my smart phone I was rather excited for this predictive text technology.Boy was I wrong. Predictive text is more of a program designed to make you appear retarded to friends and colleuges. My phone for example is a sick one. I didn’t program it that way, it came that […]

Smoked Brisket for my female grill masters

brisket27

I just watched a promo video for a local BBQ cook off and the one thing I noticed (other then the meat) is that the only people tending to the smokers and grills were big, sleeveless, baseball cap wearing men. Um… Did the ladies miss the memo on this one? I know I sure did. I didn’t even know there was a BBQ cook off going on until the day of, but I am not a competitive grill master. I do like to get my eat on though. But, I can’t be the only woman who is the master of […]

Triple Play: Barbecue Sauces

brisket18

I’m in BBQ withdraw. It’s summer! Every weekend is a rush to see how many barbecues we can fit in between school and work not to mention a little personal and much needed r&r. And yet, (knowing full well that I had not one but two family events the next day) 3 hours into an all barbecue marathon of Diners Drive Ins and Dives I found myself in full blown barbecue withdraw! I’m talking salivating, ready to trash the swordfish thawing in the fridge and slathering whatever protein I could find in any barbecue sauce and getting down and dirty. […]

Barbecue Chicken Burgers – Going Back for Seconds

bbq_chicken_burger

With all the new recipes I post on PtS, it rarely leaves time for any repeat meals. Sure we have our favorites (Mr. Ortega, will you please marry me so I may inherit your wonderful taco empire?) but it’s pretty much a new surprise every time I call out that dinners ready. “What do you mean you don’t know what were having? Have you tasted it?” “No” “Then how do you know if it’s good?” “It just is.” “But how do you knnoooooow?” This is not a dramatization, wish I could say it was, but it ain’t.  It’s a normal […]
