Lets all say Aloha to a Hawaiian Pulled Pork Sandwich!

Have your own luau with hula stirts and flower leis while you gather the family around the supper table. Tonights "set it and forget it" dinner is inspired by the flavors of Hawaii and my favorite Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch.

I love how easy this recipe is for Mom and Dad to tuck away some hidden flavors of pineapple and teriyaki while this pork shoulder slow cooks all day and is fork tender and ready to shred just in time for a little family moment. After all, that's what this is all about! Ohana.

I was probably too old to have had the obsession with Lilo and Stitch that I did, but something about that movie connected with me right away. Lilo is quirky in all the right ways and the moment Stitch says he's lost, I lost it. You can probably catch me quoting some of my favorite lines on any given day and often sneaking a watch when I know no one else will be home.

What Should I use for Hawaiian Pulled Pork?

This is a part that often confuses people. The cut of meat that you are looking for is called a Pork Butt, or often, Boston Butt. This is actually the shoulder of a pig. The term "butt" refers to the widest part of an animal, in a pig's case, the shoulder area. This meat tends to fairly tough. The shoulder is mostly muscle, and works pretty hard over the pig's life. So this piece of meat needs to be cooked low and slow. Perfect for pulled pork.

Hawaiian Pulled Pork Sandwich

Grab some Hawaiian soft rolls if you can, but any rolls will do. I served this with a pineapple spiked cole slaw. If you haven't tried slaw on top of a pulled pork sandwich yet, it's a game changer.

You are going to want to make more than you think you need. These are that good. And if you don't eat it all, no problem. Leftover pork makes fantastic quesadillas or is an added bonus mixed in leftover macaroni and cheese.

8 hours 15 minutes
Serves: 16 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 ½ pounds pork shoulder
  • ½ cup teriyaki sauce
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup chili sauce
  • 1 6- ounce can pineapple juice
  • 1 medium onion - chopped
  • 2 carrots - chopped
  • 16 hamburger rolls

For the Hawaiian Sauce

  • 2 tbs canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon ginger - chopped
  • 2 teaspoon garlic - chopped

Instructions

  • Sprinkle the pork with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  • In a bowl whisk together the teriyaki, chicken broth, brown sugar, soy sauce, chili sauce and pineapple juice. Set aside.
  • Put the chopped onions and carrots in a 5-quart slow cooker. Place the pork on top of the carrots and onions and pour half of the pineapple juice mixture over pork. Reserve remainder for Hawaiian sauce. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours until the pork is easily shred with a fork.

Meanwhile, make the Hawaiian sauce:

  • Heat the oil over medium heat in a medium saucepan. Add garlic and ginger and saute until soft, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the remaining pineapple juice mixture, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Serve the shredded pork on rolls drizzled with the Hawaiian sauce or on the side for dipping.

Just curious, what kind of chili sauce is used? Is it the bottle kind like Heinz or the Asian type?(like Rooster sauce)

    1. I used regular old Heinz, though I did think long and hard on using an Asian. I just figured for the amount used, my mouth would be on fire if I used a Rooster sauce.

  8. I want to try this but with brisket instead!

Oooo, I LOVE Lilo & Stitch! Beauty And The Beast is my favorite Disney movie, but Lilo and Nemo are close seconds.

The pulled pork looks wonderful! Pineapple goes so well in bbq sauce and I love the addition of the teriyaki sauce in this.

  10. Yes please, I love some sweetness to my pork!

How many people does this serve?

    1. Honestly, I can't recall. It made a ton of sliders and I would figure it could feed 8 with sides from loose memory.

  14. How do you make this without a slow cooker? Can it be done in a thermal cooker? How? Oven, how?

    1. Hi Keely, I have never tried working with a thermal cooker. For an oven - I would braise covered until the pork is fork tender. Slow cookers create a high moisture envirornment to keep everything juicy. Think about checking as the pork is braising to make sure there is enough liquid. Cheers,

  15. Hi there I am wondering how many servings this feeds. I have a crowd of about 30 people to feed and would love to make this. Please Let me know. Thank you!

    1. I would double down easily. Also, if you have other things for people to nibble on and these sliders aren't the only thing, you may be safe. I always make too much and would double this along with some other fun finger foods! 😀
