I don't know about you, but I love my fat kid friendly meals. I love the unhealthy, cheesy, ooey gooey kind of meals that have little to no nutritional value. I'm a glutton for punishment because after every one of those meals, I sit back in all that sloth-like glory and regret every bite. After the fact, I realize that I could have eaten a delicious salad and felt just as full. But every chance I get, I'm more likely to pick cheesy pizza over a salad and thereby, wallow in my own gluttony.

So, it's up to me to try to beat myself at the market before we end up having another cheese steak night. But often sometimes I still succumb to those glorious cheesy cravings.

Cheesy 2-meat Stromboli - A quick and easy comfort food meal. Recipe on PassTheSushi.comIngredients:

For the Dough:

  • 1 (.25 oz) package active dry yeast
  • 1 â…“ cups warm water (110° to 115°)
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 to 5 cups all-purpose flour

For the Filling:

  • ¼ lb thinly sliced ham
  • ¼ lb reduced fat pepperoni
  • Dried basil
  • Dried oregano
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Preparation:
In the bowl of an electric stand mixer, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add oil, salt and 2 cups flour; fitted with the paddle attachment, beat until smooth. Stir in enough flour to form a soft dough. Switching to the dough hook attachment, knead dough on low speed until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes.

Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide in half. Roll one portion into a 15 x 12-inch rectangle. Arrange ham slices lengthwise down half of rectangle. Place pepperoni on top. Sprinkle with a little bit of basil and oregano. Arrange provolone slices over the top and then add the mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with a little more basil and oregano. Fold plain half of dough over filling and seal ends well. Brush with oil; sprinkle with oregano.

Bake on a baking sheet at 400°F for 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool slightly; cut into 1-inch slices.

The dough recipe makes enough for two cheesy Stromboli. If you are going to make both, double the filling ingredients. If you aren't going to make both, you can freeze the second dough until ready to use it later.

I called this 'quick and easy" because it is. I prepped the dough before work and in under 30 minutes had dinner on the table for us and a guest. I don't think it gets much easier than that, especially when you have company.

I'm no nutritionist but I don't think that we really eat that badly in this house. Sure we may devious more than a small countries recommended daily intake of carbohydrates but our fridge always has veggies in it. I promise. I even posted a salad once... a long time ago... here. 🙂

Delicious! Nothing about this looks easy, but that's the fun of it, right? Love all the ingredients in the filling. My husband would totally dig this.

  9. This looks incredible, Kita! I love meals with gooey cheese included...and, hey, you used reduced fat pepperoni! Brownie points for that 🙂

Looks awesome! I love stromboli and I am also one of those people that just cannot pick a salad over a piece of pizza, sometimes I have both haha 😉

Hard to pass up pizza for salad. I'd use turkey pepperoni and low fat cheese, some whole wheat flour in the dough and feel like I was eating a healthy meal!

  13. Lauren @ FromtheLittleYellowKitchen says:

It has so few ingredients...Very tempting! Gosh I wish I didn't just have my wisdom teeth pulled so I could make these. Oral surgeries are the absolute worst thing a food blogger can go through!

  17. Amy Bakes Everything says:

Wow! That looks so good, my husband and kids would love this! Sounds easy and quick, great job!

  18. Wow, that looks wonderful! I'd love to try this instead of my usual stromboli with store-bought canned crust! I'm wondering, when you said you prepped the dough before work...then what? I leave before 7am and am not home until just after 4pm, is there a way I could do this, too? (totally unfamiliar with doughs made from scratch!)

    1. I had a very short day at work, only a few hours - and everything rises slow in my house, so I let it sit in the over with the door closed. If it was going to be a long work day, I would prep the dough, cover and place in the fridge to rise. A friend of mine believes its best if it rises over night in the fridge in a heavy dutch oven sealed.

  19. A little bit of everything says:

I've made several yeast baked goodies but never tried stromboli.
next time when hubby asks for pizza night I'll make stromboli and use some cheese and herbs for filling. Thanks Kita

  20. Kim- Liv Life says:

This stromboli is at each and every neighborhood gathering we have!! So glad you liked it! I'm really liking the cheese on top!

  21. Jenny (VintageSugarcube) says:

Stromboli should absolutely be it's own food group. I could eat 3 of those this morning! Not kidding. Love the recipe. 🙂

  22. Made this for last Saturday night's dinner. Two questions - did you cut slits on the top of your stromboli and did you also sprinkle with cheese? I rolled mine a little too big and we had a lot of extra dough on the one side and not a lot of filling. Things you learn as you go. Kids and hubby loved it and we will definitely make again!

    1. I did cut slits in the top to vent and sprinkled cheese on top. I pretty much live by the rule that you can't have too much cheese.

  23. This was simple to make and really good! I didn't realize it made 2 loaves but the ingredients were not doubled. I covered all the dough with the meat and cheese and rolled it instead and it turned out beautifully. Thanks!
