Angel Hair Pasta Salad with Corn and Chorizo for Pass the Cook Book Club

Summer Angel Hair Pasta Salad with Corn and Chorizo | PasstheSushi.com

Someone should warn you that as you get older, time speeds up. I am pretty sure I am still flexing my pasta rolling arms in satisfaction and it’s already time for the May round of Pass the Cook Book Club. What’s that, you ask. Oh, just a totally chill group on facebook where we pick a book and some recipes then all give them a try on the same date. Pretty fun, low key, and a cook way to try out new recipes. Best part is you don’t even have to be a blogger. You may just enjoy reading food […]

Peil de Sandia aka Pickled Watermelon Rind

Pickled Watermelon Rind for Salads \ PasstheSushi.com

Food lets us travel and explore places that we may never actually get to experience. Culture is so deeply rooted in flavor and food that there is so much we can enjoy about a far off place just by taking the time in our own homes to adventure with a recipe or two. This is another recipe from the beautiful collection featured in  Charcutería: The Soul of Spain, a collection of traditional Spanish recipes by Jeffrey Weiss. This cookbook is stunning, gorgeous and made for the serious culinary enthusiast. The recipes are thorough, some require seeking out special ingredients that you aren’t […]

Tortellini Pasta Salad

tortellini-salad-0224FI

So, as far as food blogs go, I’m kind of missing the mark lately. I didn’t realize some kids had already returned to school and looking at my Pinterest feed you all are well into Halloween planning and I’m over here still pulling together summer barbecue and ice cream posts. Oops. If summer flew by for me, how do you guys with kids do it?! I mean between work, more work, bikes, and living, I’m pretty sure if I was responsible for another human it probably wouldn’t have seen a bath in like 3 weeks. Not that I don’t think kids […]

Watermelon Salad with a Balsamic Reduction

Watermelon Salad from PasstheSushi.com

I feel like I haven’t been cooking as much this summer, when I think the truth is, I just have gotten way to used to cooking as much as I do and it doesn’t feel like as much. The other day I knocked out three different cupcakes and icing and realized it didn’t take all day and wasn’t that big a deal. I remember when piping icing used to be huge ordeal. I need a new hobby. Speaking of hobbies, I really want washi tape. Not sure why. But it seems all cute and crafty. Which I am neither. Here’s […]

Asian Pork and Cabbage Salad

Asian Pork and Cabbage Salad via PasstheSushi.com

It’s not Monday – and I am desperately trying to stick to the salad theme until next week when Summer officially hits but there was a lot going on this week. So instead of having you time travel back to Monday when we are so close to the weekend, just bare with. ;D The next few weeks aren’t showing any signs of slowing down either. Let’s see if I can magically pull something off before next Monday for ya. In the meantime, I’m considering signing myself up for summer camp and just playing with glue sticks and dried macaroni for a […]

Warm Summer Potato Herb Salad

Warm Summer Potato Herb Salad from PasstheSushi.com

Why hello Summer. You blasted in with out warning. It’s cool, I wasn’t ready for you yet. Hadn’t swept the back deck or gotten out the lawn chairs. The plants went from frost warning to brown stumps of dried out hat. But it’s ok. Come on down, we’ll make room at the table for you. Ignore my passive aggressive attitude towards Mrs. Nature again. It’s been like 9 billion degrees all week and I just wasn’t ready for that. I love the summer, and everything that comes along with it. But we were getting a great dose of spring in […]

Fresh Fruit Salad with Honey Lime Syrup

Fruit Salad with Honey Lime Syrup via PasstheSushi.com

Whoever hit the fast forward button can stop now.  Seriously, I would like about 5 minutes to myself without anyone, including my over pushy personal bubble lacking cat who insists on opening the bathroom door and barging in invading my bubble. (Not happening) Last week was a whirlwind of running (another great 5k – now time to upgrade), team meetings, website designs, an attempt to adopt a pup who is in need of some extra snuggles, dinner with friends, barbecues, chickens on BMX bikes, a remodel at my shop, and family. I am not sure that I blinked, but damned if the week isn’t […]

Grilled Venison Kabobs with Romaine

Grilled Venison Kabobs with Romaine from PasstheSushi

Any more a day can’t go by without one social media network changing things for the better. Every time I think I have one figured out, poof. Facebook makes it harder to see ‘pages’ feeds, google wen’t all time line on me, pinterest changed something (though, I can’t remember what, so it really must not have been that important) and twitter gave us three more characters. Well, #%!… I’m pretty sure our phones can flirt with people on Christian Farmer Mingle without us knowing it and my personal photos can be viewed by all on Picasa. If you are still […]

Corn-Chip Chicken Salad

Corn-Chip Chicken Salad from PasstheSushi.com

Some days I want to quit. I want to pick my bike up and throw it into the woods and never look back. Some time between the seventh or tenth attempt to not get over a log, around the fourth crash things just start to get not fun. I am not pro rider. Heck, I’m not even that skilled of a rider. Bleeding and bruised, I want to quit.   Thursday night, I was there. Angry and discouraged with myself, wondering how hard a nice easy hobby like crocheting would be to learn. Saturday morning rolled around and I wasn’t in a […]

Tuna Pasta Salad

Tuna Pasta Salad via PasstheSushi.com

Part of me wishes every weekend could be as action packed as this last one, and part of my knows I will never survive. The computer was shut down from Thursday afternoon on as the day ended up becoming a much needed day spent tending to the yard and garden with some unexpected free time… oh and Handsome scored himself another bike. His second this week! (though the second was a loan, I’m still seeing green with some serious bike envy). But its all good, my new Specialized is on the way. I’ll stop with the bike talk now… So Thursday looked […]

For those following the epic race season I have been (unintentionally) have this spring this Monday isn’t going to let you down (and by epic, I mean that I’m racing. Not that it’s been amazing or anything). For the rest of you who are just upset that I am no longer publishing on time… This weeks race was the Bikeline Spring XC race, the race Handsome started this wild and crazy hobby with last year. It’s a huge event and in our back yard. I was on the fence about whether or not to race it, but am ultimately glad I did. […]

Chipotle Southwest Ranch Dressing

Highs and lows come quick in the active life I’m living these days. Though really it’s all highs to some point as I would have never imagined myself competing twice for anything in one weekend unless it involved shoving past kids for a giant chocolate chip cookie. I could totally do that twice in one weekend. Or maybe I just really want a cookie as I sit coming down off of the endorphin high from the weekend and think that everything sounds pretty tasty… This weekend I ran a fun little 5k on Friday night and (unless someone can prove me otherwise) I was […]

Grilled Tequila Shrimp Salad

Chasing Matthew McConaughey – My Quest as a runner. I have officially, with no plan or strategy, now ran in two 5k’s and so far it’s all been about this one pretty dude. I mean… pretty. Not a word often used to describe men. I’m convinced this man was bred from a tube in the All Spice test lab to be the man your man wants to be. His flowing hair was developed by Vidal Sasoon, his outdoors-man look sponsored by every North Face ad, and his perfectly tanned skin define the lines that ancient Greeks would believe that of a Gods. This dude makes rugged look like […]

Broiled Caprese Salad

Broiled Caprese Salad from PasstheSushi.com

They aren’t all pretty. They aren’t all supposed to be. Mom’s tuna noodle casserole isn’t photogenic, but sometimes it hits the spot. Same for meatloaf. Yeah, try to gussy that up for a great food photography shot without using some hairspray. Other wise, it’s a brown lump of meat with some red smeared on top. But damn, it’s delicious. This Caprese salad did not turn out catwalk ready like I had envisioned it. But that doesn’t matter because it was amazing. I even ate tomatoes. Strait up. And didn’t try to pick around them (mainly because it was darned impossible). So serve this simple […]

Spinach & Steak Salad

Steak Salad from PasstheSushi.com

Things are picking up as spring is looming in the distance while cold temperatures seem to hang over us. Spring isn’t sprung… it’s more like a slow creep this year. But that’s not stopping us from pulling the bikes out, still putting the layers on and pedaling. We rode Friday night for an hour. I’m still getting steady on the bike in the way that I was last year. Handsome, who is naturally gifted and raised in a more wooded area is natural and comfortable dodging limbs and launching himself over logs in the tight turns of the trails. Me, […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Taco Salad

Taco Salad from PasstheSushi.com

With the sun creeping up earlier and earlier I find that I naturally get up earlier and earlier. But waking up before the sun – so not my thing. This weekend was our first race of the season (and by our I mean his because I’m a big pansy and didn’t want to race previously adventured territory). The race started at 8:30, you should be there an hour before to get your info and get ready. The race was an hour and some odd amounts of minutes away. If you are doing the quick math – we are talking leaving at 6. Which […]

Best Ever Barbecued Ribs & Charred Corn Salad with Basil and Tomatoes

How do you feel about tipping? What if it was suddenly forced on you? The two of us went to one of my favorite restaurants the other night, had a decent meal, average service, and enjoyed ourselves. When the bill was brought out, the numbers looked right and we were just about to throw the card into the folder when we noticed that the tip had already been included. An 18% tip. For two people. Now, normally, I am known to leave a killer tip if the service is good. Even if the food isn’t at it’s best, if I believe everyone […]

Grilled Thai Turkey Salad

Hope everyone had a great Father’s Day weekend! We took a little trip down to a town called  St. Michaels for an antique boat show with Handsome’s parents on Sunday.  There were tons of old wooden boats docked for people to look at. The town was beautiful too, with little shops and tons of ice cream parlors! We had a fantastic dinner at Akai Sushi & Cafe and then wondered around some out let stores. If we had fit in a little mountain biking it would have been a perfect Sunday. Now for some healthy Monday post weekend detox type food.

Italian Hoagie Salad

Let’s take a moment to discuss the art of the U-turn. U-turns should be a fundamental part of driver’s education in which it is explained and practiced, that on occasion, if one has missed their destination or proper road, that they can, at a safer point further down the road for themselves and other vehicles around them, make a 180 degree turn to then head back to that which is was they missed. I think America has forgotten the art of the U-turn. Instead, people will now dart across 4 lanes of on coming traffic just to be in the turn lane […]

Pesto-Chicken Salad Stuffed Tomatoes

Sometimes I get the notion that I could be an adorable 50’s housewife. That fleeting thought last all of 30 seconds before I realize I could not possibly be one of those women that waited on my husband hand over foot while tending to matronly things all day every day. Oh heck no. But when I do get that notion, pictures of well tailored dresses, keds and block parties come to mind. Oh, and these oh-so-cute-make-your-nosy-neighbor-envious-with-your-mad-hostess-skills-salads come to mind. And a few more dresses, but what can a girl do? Off to find pearl necklaces and all. Who doesn’t love a little […]

Have you guys seen that new TV show, New Girl? It stars Zooey Deschanel who is a recently dumped girl trying to break free from her model friends and start fresh (though, it seems like they are still friends, she just didn’t want to live with her anymore). I watched the first episode the other night and actually found myself laughing out load. Sadly, because if you ever wanted to know what I am really like in my own kitchen, Zooey’s character Jess is probably about as close as you will ever get to an on screen interpretation. Where I would […]

I know Im not alone, I have a frisky little cell phone. I can’t spell. I love spell check and run it at least three times per post and guartentee there is still at least one misspelling in every one of my posts that I find later. So when I got my smart phone I was rather excited for this predictive text technology.Boy was I wrong. Predictive text is more of a program designed to make you appear retarded to friends and colleuges. My phone for example is a sick one. I didn’t program it that way, it came that […]

Lobster Rolls

I’m selfish. Handsome is in school again for a few nights a week along with some online classes as well. Between work and day to day life, it’s a heavy load. I love that he is in school and am so happy to see him doing well. Secretly, I even love Monday night alone as my night to catch up on blogging things (try to read other blogs, watch horrid TV, blast the speakers and just unwind all by myself). But I wait on the steps when it’s time for him to come home, long after the sun has set […]

Broccoli Salad

I just read a tiny article in Rachael Ray magazine (August 2011) that asks the question raw or cooked when it comes to vegetables. They state that there is new date from the University of Arkansas that suggest that both have their advantages. Cooking vegetables helps with digestion and changes some of the nutrients making them equally as healthy. We’ll use broccoli as an example. It is listed a having vitamin  and folate (“which boosts mood”) in its raw form where cooked broccoli has certain vitamin A precursors which “give you dewy, youthful skin and hair.” Now, I’m sure this […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Creamy Chicken and Pasta Salad

I can not be the only one who needs a day off after that ‘holiday’ weekend, right? Truth of the matter is – I didn’t get a day off! I had to work Friday, Saturday and Monday – leaving Saturday to bake and cook in the morning and run from my parents to Hansome’s parents for over 12 hours in 99 billion degree weather.  Here it is Tuesday and I’m back to the weekly grind. I think I missed out on something here! I even lost my Do Nothing Monday. I feel so robbed. I hope everyone partied hard to […]

Quick Dinner Fixins: Curry Chicken Salad, oh, and I’m the devil

curry_chicken_salad10

Today is all about building bridges. And getting over them. I’m not sure how to start today’s story so I apologize for any lacking continuity ahead of time. About a year ago I received a Facebook message from someone using the pseudonym of a comic book character (clever right, yeah, I know…). It turned out to be an ex-boyfriend seeking out forgiveness for his behavior. This next statement is going to sound harsh, but I really didn’t feel anything. No flaming anger, no relief, no gratefulness that he was suddenly aware of his previous behavior. Nothing. Heck,  I didn’t even […]

Can’t go wrong with meat and potatoes.

DSC_0238

Some nights you just know you can cook. Tonight was one of those nights. Dinner was simple, easy, healthy and delicious. When I could smell it almost all coming together it didn’t matter if it would sound interesting to anyone else, take a good pic for the blog, or get me more followers. All that mattered is that I knew it would taste good, and it did. Tonight’s meal came fresh from the pages of the July/August issue of Food Network Magazine. I started getting Food Network Magazine when it first started getting published last year. It has surprisingly grown […]
