Banana Cake with Chocolate Glaze is a classic cake with rich, moist banana cake layers, accented with cinnamon. The whole thing is covered in a thick chocolate glaze. Delicious!

Chow just posted an interesting article about male 'foodies' in the kitchen and how they aren't really helping out at all when it comes down to dinner. It explains that men can sometimes get overly involved in their projects, spending more time analyzing the data then cooking a real meal. And how they can bring an 'Iron Chef' attitude to the kitchen, wanting to compete rather then feed the kids.

I have seen men take more time thinking than doing, but I am not affected by this male 'foodie' phenomenon. Actually, I have quite the opposite problem. The more I become interested in food, the fewer recipes Handsome seems to remember, or want to cook, stating that I would just make it better anyway. Could this be because he works more, harder, and goes to school most weeknights? Probably. But every once in a while, it is nice to come home to something someone else prepared for you.

Even if it is steak-ums and macaroni and cheese. I'm OK with that. 😉

Especially when there's banana cake with chocolate glaze for dessert.

Banana Cake with Chocolate Glaze

from The Pastry Affair

Banana Cake with Chocolate Glaze is a classic banana layer cake accented with cinnamon. The cake is covered in a thick chocolate glaze. \\ PassTheSushi.comIngredients:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbs baking powder
  • ½ teas cinnamon
  • ½ teas salt
  • 4 oz. unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 overripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 teas vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease 2 8-inch round cake baking pans.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, scraping down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed. Mix in the bananas and vanilla extract.
Working in small batches, slowly add in the flour mixture and buttermilk in 5 additions, starting and ending with the flour. Pour batter evenly between prepared baking pans. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes before removing from cake pans. Cool completely before frosting.

For the Chocolate Glaze

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces (2 cups) semi-sweet chocolate
  • 8 tablespoons butter

Preparation:

In a double boiler, melt together the chocolate and butter, stirring until smooth. Glaze will be thick. Remove from heat and frost cake before glaze hardens. Garnish with chopped walnuts if desired.
Let cake set, slice and serve.

So, would a man have been unable to make this simple banana cake without first trying to figure out how to inject pure whole bananas into a batter mixture using a hadron collider (imagine that mess) or is this man 'foodie' handicap all just an excuse for some men never being asked to help out in the kitchen?

My hubby's the same way. He says he loves to good, but follows that with, " But why would I cook when you're so good at it?" Tricky...

  5. "Some" of us male foodies are the only ones cooking in the kitchen. I personally don't have time to over analyze - its look, cook feed and get on with the other 55 things that need attention.

That cake looks great, too. It reads like my grammas banana bread, but with chocolate! how wicked it that?

  6. This cake looks so pretty! I've only had banana cake with cream cheese frosting, never with chocolate. I will have to try this variety...it sounds delicious!

The texture of this looks wonderful, I'm always looking for a good banana cake recipe! My husband is that one in the kitchen who overthinks things and spends way too much time on logistics in the kitchen. He is a great cook we just have way different coking styles!

  9. I just tried to reach through the screen on my computer....it didn't work, bummer!!! Your cake looks so moist, and delicious:-) Banana cake is my most favorite cake in the whole world, did you save me a small piece? Beautiful, Hugs, Terra

My husband is too "macho" to bake something. He helps me to cook, but only with "male" tasks, like cut onions or garlic...and if he has to cook, well...BBQ is for him.
Your cake looks wonderful, I never tried a banana cake, only as muffin or bread. But this is a very good idea to have bananas in a different way. Thanks for sharing.

  12. I've never tried banana cake with buttermilk ... this I gotta do. Looks beautifully moist! and the chocolate glaze .... extra sinful! I want!

My husband doesn't really know how to cook, but I'm with you, sometimes it would be nice not to have to worry about it. So, every time he goes back to CA to visit his family, I tell him he needs to learn how to cook one new thing! Its been working out well for me! Oh, and P.S. This cake is amazeballs!

  18. Lookin Good Kita! I'm in love with the glaze. I'd eat that first and then dive into the luscious cake.

  24. Dionne Baldwin says:

Gorgeous cake, my friend! Wow, I love the contrast of the cake and the chocolate! I really really really want something sweet right now. With bananas and chocolate. 😀

My other half loves to cook and he's even gone on adventures and baked before! Quite successfully too! He does tend to over-analyze sometimes (he's been "working on" a secret recipe for 4 months) and he gets perfectionist when it comes to following the recipe. Dinner can take upwards of 4 hours...I am not complaining but I have learned that if it is a school night it should be started early or the night before.

I remember one time I was wanting cookies real bad so he whipped up some madelines! I was impressed and they turned out sensational.

The last photo of your whole pretty cake makes me want to bite into it like an apple! I won't, that would be rude. But I want to. 🙂

  25. Tia @ Buttercreambarbie says:

that looks truly fantastic! way to take a banana cake to th enext level.

  26. Rachel @ Bakerita says:

    This looks amazing!
Love the chocolate banana combo... although I would be tempted to sneak in some peanut butter too!

  27. My hubby can't cook to save his life. It's true when we met all he had in the fridge was 1 single can of red bull and some margarine for when he got bagels. He ate out every night and owned not a single utensil. My kitchen is safer without him in it lol. He could not make me this simple yet lovely banana cake but he would certainly go out and buy me one, and that is worth something. 🙂 The cake and photos look lovely as always.

  28. Anna @ hiddenponies says:

This cake is BEYOOtiful!! I love banana cake, but for some reason always do cream cheese frosting, I'll have to try this!

  29. The Mom Chef ~ Taking on Magazines One Recipe at a Time says:

I have over-ripe bananas sitting on my table and have been looking for something other than the standard banana bread to make with them. Somehow I found this recipe and now I have what I need. I'll be making this beautiful cake today; though I'll probably put peanut butter frosting between the cake layers. Dudette and Hubby love bananas and peanut butter. 🙂

  31. Hi! I am planning to make this for my friend's birthday. Is it ok if i make the batter the day before, cover and refrigerate? Will the cake still turn out the same? Thank you! 🙂

    1. Hi Elisa,
I wouldn't make the batter the night before.. The problem with refrigerating the batter and then baking the cake is that the butter and eggs won't be at room temperature, which effects how they bake. I would say you could make the cake the night before, cover/wrap in plastic wrap and leave on the counter. If I recall correctly, this cake comes together pretty quickly. Because its a glaze, it doesn't have to be perfect either. If you are rushed for time, don't try to cover the entire cake with the glaze (it's hard because it's not firm like an icing and you will get glaze everywhere) -instead pour some glaze on top using the back of a spoon spread it out to the edges leaving drops running down the side. That always looks cool. Hope this helps!

  32. Alright, thank you so much! 🙂

  33. Sammi @Sammi Sunshine says:

That's exactly what my husband does! When he wants a certain food, he always begs me to make it because he says I always make it better. But he is very talented himself. Haha, anyhow, I want this cake so so bad! Chocolate!
