24 Hours in Nashville - A foodie guide to the best eats

You have 24 hours in Nashville Tennessee. No pressure but you are looking for the best eats in Nashville and on the quick. One, I should warn you that is simply not enough time. This city is booming with cuisine, and I am not just talking biscuits and barbecue. There are so many flavors happening in Nashville, I have already promised myself at least 2 more foodie tours of Music city and soon. Two, bring your stretch pants because this food tour is no joke and if you want to make the most of it, you are going to need to be comfortable.

Before I get started - I just want to send a HUGE thank you out to Catherine, my editor at CharBroil, author of TheSouthinMyMouth Blog, and all-star powerhouse behind Community Resource Center, where she generously helps supply the homeless and those in need with essentials for living. Catherine generously took the time out of her day to show me around Nashville, from her butcher to the hideous statue of Athena, it was an unexpectedly awesome day - one I can not wait to repeat. One day with her and I wanted to be her best friend for life. Thank you, Catherine.

BREAKFAST

Merridees Breadbasket and Bakery - 110 4th Ave S, Franklin, TN 37064  Start the day off strong with a heaping portion of biscuits and gravy from this iconic Tennessean bakery. Even at 8 AM on a Wednesday, there was little to no space to creep in and find a seat after ordering at the busy counter. With several pastry chefs and busy cooks behind the counter rolling fresh doughs, whipping up savory breads and making what may be the most beautiful pecan rolls I have ever seen. I took about 3 bites of this hearty breakfast and was already wondering how I was going to make it through the day. It was heavy and rich and amazing. I knew I wouldn't be able to stop. I decided after one biscuit to call it and go for a walk before heading on.

Lunch

Loveless Cafe - 8400 Tennessee Highway 100, Nashville, TN 37221 When in Rome, right? No, when in Tennessee you have got to make the trip to Loveless Cafe. The world famous biscuits coming out of this little motel on the side of the highway are exactly what you expect. I sat down and the first sentence from my waitress was that the biscuits were in the oven and would be out in a minute. Welcome to the south, because that is exactly the kind of home cooking what this girl wanted to hear.  3 little pots of jam came out with my personal platter of biscuits and I delicately smeared a touch on each one before diving into my BBQ pork sandwich.

Hot chicken in Nashville at Husk. We need some of this up my way. #Nashville #travel #instafood A photo posted by girlcarnivore (@girlcarnivore) on

Dinner

Husk - 37 Rutledge St, Nashville, TN 37210. When I mentioned Nashville to my foodie friends - everyone chimed in and said I had to try Husk. It's Chef Sean Brock's establishment among the soft but busy streets of Nashville. Tucked into it's own garden oasis, it seems like you aren't in a city at all when you step into the front door of Husk. There's a large chalkboard proudly announcing where all the food is sourced from for the day. It's going to be a hard battle when trying to narrow down what to order (all of it) but please, whatever you do, go all in for the grits. The creamy blend of flavors can't even be described in words. Grits. It was one of those life-altering moments. Also, one of those moments where you realize that grits that are not from Husk have forever been ruined for you. The hot chicken was amazing and even the house pickles, something I don't normally enjoy, were worth going back in for several bites. All I can say is I am lucky that at this point, my food tour was coming to a close.

If you are headed to Nashville, make reservations. Get a table at Husk. I don't care if you make it to the Grand Ole Opry or not, Husk is a spot you don't want to miss.

Did I mention the pork lard honey butter? Oh, yeah, there was that too. Pork lard honey butter. Which means at room temp, it's going to dissolve into that parker house roll like magic, leaving you licking your fingers, and wondering if you could possible eat just one more.

Dessert

Jeni's Ice Cream - Because there is always room for a scoop of ice cream right? A group of photographers and I split 6 different flavors of Jeni's signature ice cream. I am pretty sure it was the college dorm experience I had been missing my whole life. I think the chocolate peanut butter coconut combination I had was just about perfect.

I love jeni's! I'm so glad to be back in Ohio where they are EVERYWHERE. But of course now you have me missing all the southern flavors in TN.
