Buttermilk Breakfast Cake

I have been super busy the past few days trying to get some aprons out and finish up a new site — not to mention trying to figure out twitter for my store, facebooking for this site and all the other crap that comes along with social media. I enjoy being busy. Actually, I really don’t know what to do when I have nothing to do. I get stir crazy really really quickly. There’s always a project to start or something new to try in the kitchen. It’s the whole ‘birds are singing, suns shining, we’re burning daylight’ attitude. Read the rest of this entry »

Can’t go wrong with meat and potatoes.

Some nights you just know you can cook. Tonight was one of those nights. Dinner was simple, easy, healthy and delicious. When I could smell it almost all coming together it didn’t matter if it would sound interesting to anyone else, take a good pic for the blog, or get me more followers. All that mattered is that I knew it would taste good, and it did.

Tonight’s meal came fresh from the pages of the July/August issue of Food Network Magazine. I started getting Food Network Magazine when it first started getting published last year. It has surprisingly grown on me since its conception. I don’t go to it expecting long or informative articles, but quick snippets and ideas. The food looks good and, most of the time, relatively easy. I don’t like the “him vs her” section because having Saundra Lee compete against Emril Laggase is like having a staring contest with a cat. Some things you just can’t win. Saundra Lee Vs. Rachael Ray — ok fair. Either of those two against a trained chef who has run a real restaurant (in most cases several) — not even a challenge. Sure their version may be cute, homey and come with a tablescape, but I can tell you which one tastes better.

Maybe its not me, its you.…

You know the saying — “full me once shame on you, full me twice, shame on me.” Well, full me a third time — it’s my damned fault — I should have learned my lesson. What was I thinking?

In the past week I have prepared 3 recipes from the Neely’s on Foodnetwork.com and for all 3 my taste buds have been left saddened by the lack of flavor, zest or zing. I am not a fan of the Neely’s on TV because it’s just too much mushy for me. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for anyone who is that in love, but it just seems a bit much on the show. The boyfriend cooks!

Well, I finally went ahead and made a facebook page for Pass the Sushi… I kind of feel like a tool (but as it seems to be doing the girls at SiTs some good, hopefully it does for me too). Please check it out on the sidebar.

Now, on to your regularly scheduled post. Read the rest of this entry »

Single white female looking for strong well built spatula

And Peanut Butter Crispy Bars from Baked.

Have you ever realized how important a well stocked kitchen is? Having the right tools for cooking is like a doctor making sure he has the right scalpel. Ok, maybe not that serious, but you get what I’m saying. You don’t realize how important a wooden spoon, offset spatula, micro grater, or hell, a good spatula is until you are working in a kitchen without these basic tools.

I’m, however, at an odd point where I refuse to buy any more kitchen supplies until I have my own kitchen again. My kitchen is well stocked *in boxes somewhere* but there is a list of things I need. Its the most ridiculous thing I have ever made myself not spend money on — however I can’t possibly justify any more kitchen purchases when most of my life is stored away in cardboard anyway. It makes me rather sad because there is a list of things I don’t have that I would love to (a cast iron skillet, a dutch oven, tart pan and my often dreamed about Kitchenaid counter top mixer.… to name a few.…). When I can unpack my things, reacquaint myself with what I do actually own, only then will I consider another purchase. Read the rest of this entry »
